The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival, takes place during the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar when the moon is said to be at its fullest and roundest. Traditionally the festival marked the end of the harvest period when family and friends gathered to celebrate a time of plenty.
In Thailand, the Chinese community celebrates their Mooncake Festival at their homes to make special offerings of incense, red candles, fruit and mooncakes. Mooncakes are also exchanged as gifts. The round sweet cakes filled with sesame seeds, ground lotus seeds and egg, and other delights.
