ACE INA Overseas Insurance Company Limited and ACE Life Assurance Public Company Limited announced today that that they have selected three best Corporate Social Responsibility projects created by university students for its CSR program, ‘Enhancing Lives with ACE.” With a total financial support of THB 200,000 available, the initiative encouraged Thai students to submit CSR proposals in line with ACE’s over-arching philanthropic support for improving education and health, alleviating poverty and protecting the environment.
The most promising initiative belongs to a team from Boromarajonani College of Nursing, from Surin Province in the Northeast of Thailand, comprising 100 students from the university’s Nursing department. They took the top prize of THB 100,000 following their demonstration of a proposal which will deliver positive impact on the local community. Their CSR scheme centers on public health and education where the team will visit Ta Sawang Community in Surin Province to promote better knowledge and understanding of healthcare among a group of around 500 pre-school children, teenagers and elders to solve and prevent social problems. The project involves a variety of public health programs such as teaching parents on child development activities, showing movies to promote better understanding on how to prevent premature pregnancy, and visiting the elders to promote knowledge about healthy lifestyle. The initiative also builds strong loyalty among nursing students creating the desire to work within their local communities to solve the problem of outward skills migration.
The two runners-up prizes offered were 50,000 Baht for each team. They were a team from Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University, comprising 20 students from the university’s Political Sciences department; and a team from the Children and Youth Council (which includes students from Chiang Mai University, Bangkok University and Chaiprakarn School)
A team from Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University plans to implement a program called ‘Green Little Guides’ which will provide training for the youth in Glang District, Rayong Province so that they can become tour guides for visitors who want to explore the nature trail along the mangrove forest, and encourage them to take care of their community. The team will also renovate an important wooden bridge and take care of the mangrove forest in Paknam Prasae, Rayong province.
A team from Chaiprakarn Children and Youth Council plans to initiate a program called ‘Green Detectives’. The program will train 40 secondary school students in the community to become ‘Green Detectives’ who will survey the area around Chaiprakarn District and create a ‘Green Map’ which will map out environmental friendly and non-environmental friendly spots in the area for further environment management within the district. The team will also establish ‘No-Haze, No-Carbon Learning Center’ to promote better understanding towards environmental conservation among the villagers in the community.
Rob Wilkinson, Country President of ACE’s general insurance operation in Thailand, said, “We were very excited to receive the CSR proposals from university students from all over the nation. It was quite challenging to select the best entry from the submissions which we had received as there was such a strong showing across the board. The three finalists were selected on the strength of their ability to satisfy ACE’s Corporate Social Responsibility pillars, namely improving education and health, alleviating poverty and protecting the environment.”
Sally O’Hara, Country President of ACE’s life insurance operation in Thailand, added, “We believe all three projects will make a difference in the lives of the less privileged, and contribute towards environmental protection in a sustainable way. The three winners will help to create awareness among other youths of the importance of giving back to society. We are looking forward to seeing visible improvements in communities for which they are intended.”
In addition to financial support, the winning teams have the opportunity to participate in ACE’s Regional ‘Day of Service’ in October. A region-wide initiative inaugurated in 2012, the ‘Day of Service’ provides an opportunity for ACE’s employees in Asia Pacific to rally together and be involved in community outreach projects and activities in their localities.
