Committed to promoting safe use of agricultural chemicals and sustainable farming, Dow AgroSciences (Thailand) Ltd. has collaborated with the Thai Crop Protection Association and other business partners to organize the Product Stewardship Day at Wuttijaroen Agricultural Chemicals Store in Sai Noi district, Nonthaburi province, to raise awareness about health and safety. The event was held for the fifth consecutive year and this year welcomed over 300 farmers.
Sayomchai Singhara Na Ayuthaya, Country Commercial Leader Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar of Dow AgroSciences (Thailand) Ltd., said, “With our mission to be a leader in product safety, Dow AgroSciences puts great emphasis on the customers’ safe usage of our products. Each year, we host the Product Stewardship Day, an activity organized by Dow AgroSciences around the world to increase farmers’ awareness about safe chemical use. The activity is particularly important for Thailand as it means trying to reach the 24 million farmers in the country. We promise to continue to organize great activities for society and at present we are working with partners including government agencies and farm shops to promote sustainable farming across the country.”
The Product Stewardship Day included several activities aimed at raising awareness about chemical use and work safety, such as instructions on how to properly use the personal protection equipment, which was given to the participants free of charge at the event, recommendations for washing chemical containers at least three times before discarding to reduce residues in the environment, biomonitoring sessions done by physicians as well as talks on safe use of agricultural chemicals and proper harvest time.
Talking about the Product Stewardship Day organized by Dow AgroSciences (Thailand), Wiraporn Wuttikunakorn, owner of Wuttijaroen Agricultural Chemicals Store, said, “This is the first time Sai Noi district has had this kind of activity. It’s very useful because the farmers don’t like wearing the personal protection equipment, saying they feel uncomfortable wearing it. This event helps raise awareness about danger from improper chemical use. The biomonitoring offers empirical evidence of why the farmers need to pay more attention to their safety and wear the personal protection equipment.
Thongbai Waenthong, a farmer in Sai Noi district, added, “I’d like to thank Dow AgroSciences (Thailand) for organizing such a wonderful activity. Personally, I really enjoyed it because I can apply what I’ve learned to my work in the rice field. Previously, I was worried about how to use agricultural chemicals. After having joined today’s event, I now understand how to use the chemicals safely and properly. The personal protection equipment that the company has given us is also very useful. I’m already wearing masks while working. But now I have the full gear, which allows me to work with more safety and peace of mind.”
