Bangkok--2 Dec--KMUTT KMUTT collaborate with 4 ASEAN tigers initiate the innovation on JIPP program to co-produce the Masters for answering the problems on energy and environment of ASEAN countries Energy market integration is one of the most challenging topics for the future development of ASEAN as the economic block aspires to be: (1) a single market and production base (2) a highly competitive economic region (3) a region of equitable economic development (4) a region fully integrated into the global economy. In this regard, human resources with comprehensive knowledge on energy issues of ASEAN as a whole are essential to drive the development of AEC and the ASEAN energy market integration process. King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), a leading research-intensive university in Thailand and the region, is well recognized for its research and expertise on energy topics and its international outreach activities in education and research in this field. Realizing the need to understand the energy situation and policies of the ASEAN region, KMUTT recently initiated a special research-based, joint program on “Joint International Postgraduate Program on ASEAN Energy and Environment (JIPP)”, with five leading institutions in the region as partners. They are: Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia; University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia; University of the Philippines (UP), the Philippines; Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Vietnam; and The Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (JGSEE-KMUTT), Thailand. JIPP provides opportunities for ASEAN students to study and research on energy topics of interest to their own country and to other ASEAN members. The main mechanism is co- supervision of thesis by academics from member universities. Apart from learning the current situation and future challenges of energy and environment in ASEAN by competent professors from the five partner universities and other international partners, students will have at least one semester of study-abroad experience in one of the member universities. JIPP is a transboundary human resource development program that draws on the resources of a network of experts and tools to prepare the next-generation workforce who will be well equipped to find solutions for the energy and environmental challenges of ASEAN. With this new breed of human resources, member countries will find it beneficial in terms of enhanced negotiating power in the international arena and improved economic competitiveness. Moreover, JIPP serves as a forum for strengthening research collaboration and sharing of knowledge in ASEAN and beyond.
