Bangkok--8 Dec--ScottAsia Communications The new Similan Ballroom at the Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort was the venue for an innovative fundraiser on 29 November. The Phuket Has Been Good to Us foundation linked up with Outrigger to hold a "Black Tie, Muay Thai" event with over 170 guests that raised US$15,000 (half a million Thai baht). The foundation will use the funds to give free English lessons to school children in Phuket. The gala event was centred around a Muay Thai (Thai kick boxing) themed evening. Muay Thai is Thailand's most popular sport-cum-martial art. It combines supreme levels of physical fitness with spiritual discipline and a respect for Thai cultural traditions. The evening featured exhibition and celebrity fights and a guest dinner. After the fighting was over the dance floor was opened to continue the evening in style. Highlights of the event can be seen in the following PhuketNews TV video clip. Named after the beautiful Similan Islands in the Andaman Sea near Phuket, the Similan Ballroom, which opened in November, has already been hailed as one of the best medium-sized meeting facilities, not just in Phuket and Thailand, but in Southeast Asia. The full technical spec of the Similan Ballroom and the three breakout rooms can be found here.
