According to American Internet analytics company comScore, that figure topped the combined USD 3.7 billion (Baht 130 billion) online sales of Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday from desktop computers in the U.S.
The Singles Day or Bachelors Day, began as a small university celebration which eventually became an online global retail phenomenon in just a few years.
The Singles Day, or guang gun jie in Chinese, translates to "bare sticks holiday" and originated from Nanjing University by students in 1993. It got the name "Singles' Day" because November 11th consists of four "1"s, or four "bare stick" singles .
This year, China's online e-commerce giants Alibaba, JD.com and other online shopping sites hope to hit another record this year.
