AIT signs MoU with Irrigation Department of Pakistan’s Sindh Province

Bangkok--22 Dec--Asian Institute of Technology Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has signed a five-year agreement with the Irrigation Department, Government of Sindh, Pakistan for delivering postgraduate and short programmes and conducting training and building capacity of professionals. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Mr. Syed Zaheer Hyder Shah, Secretary, Irrigation Department, Government of Sindh, and Dr. Jonathan Shaw, Executive Director, AIT Extension in a function organized at the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Karachi on 7 December 2015. Organized in the presence of the Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, and Minister for Planning, Irrigation, Finance and Energy, Syed Murad Ali Shah. The MoU seeks to develop both long-term and short-term customised professional development courses for engineers, develop Master's and Professional Master's programs for engineers and management staff, and provide consultancy services. It will focus on Disaster Management and Mitigation, specially floods and droughts, social and environmental issues associated with water management , Integrated Water Resource Management, policy and decision making in water management, Remote Sensing and GIS in water resource management, leadership, Construction Management, and Project Management. Senior officials of the Government of Sindh who participated in the event included Mr. Baber Ali Effandi, Managing Director, Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority; Mr. Aijaz A Shaikh, Project Director Guddu Barrage; Mr. Abdul Rahman Nizamani, Chief Engineer, Small Dams; Mr. Imran Shaikh,Superintending Engineer; Mr. Zarif Khero, Superintending Engineer; and Prof. Dr. Bakhshal Khan Lashari, Project Director, The U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W). AIT was represented by Dr. Jonathan Shaw, Executive Director, AIT Extension; Mr. Fazle Karim, Head, Information Technology and Engineering Unit, AIT Extension; and Mr. Furqan Ali Shaikh, Program Officer, AIT Extension.
