Nestled in the north-eastern corner of Thailand is the town of Dan Sai in Loei province. Each year, this usually tranquil town awakens as masked "ghosts" and "spirits" dance through the streets in a grand parade, marking the first day of the Phi Ta Khon Festival.
Local legends remain undecided on how this festival began, but today, it has become one of Thailand's unique festivities, happening each year on the first weekend after the sixth full moon. This year, the festivities take place on 24 to 26 June. The three-day event begins with the residents assembling in decked out "ghost" costumes to invoke protection from the local spirits. The second day is Rocket Festival, where home-made bamboo rockets or Bang Fai are launched into the skies, in hopes of producing plentiful rainfall. On the third day, crowds gather at the local temples to receive blessings from Buddhist monks.
