Bangkok--15 Jul--ESCAP-SCAS
The Mayor of Seoul, Republic of Korea Mr. Won-soon Park will share his philosophy and policy approaches towards a sustainable and inclusive economy at a lecture at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok on Friday 8 July, entitled 'WEconomics – Seoul's Solution for Sustainability.' The lecture will be opened by Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Lecture topic
The world is in a state of great transition, with slower economic growth as a 'new normal' following the global financial crisis of 2008 and the fourth industrial revolution. Many governments which earlier adopted a state-led development model are moving to a neoliberalist, market-based economic growth model. Such strategies have led to unequal distributions of wealth and weakened community ties, which in turn have resulted in economic stagnation. With this view, Mayor Park will highlight his approaches and policies to address these challenges at the city-level in Seoul.
Biography
Mr. Park was elected Mayor of Seoul in 2011 and chair of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change in 2012. Prior to his election as mayor, Mr. Park served as a human rights lawyer and leader of Korean civil society for over thirty years. He is also the author of over twenty books on law, democracy, community development, and civil society movements.
