THNIC announced a new round for registration of ".th" Second Level Domain, without category code, for Net2Home Project under Thai Network Information Center Foundation during August 1 to September 12, 2016.
Mr. Parkpoom Tripatana, a Director of T.H.NIC Co., Ltd., who is also a member of THNIC Foundation's domain policy subcommittee, stated that after receiving a very positive response, a new round of .th registrations will be opened - in accordance with the yearly openings of such registrations since 2014 as agreed upon by the THNIC Foundation Board. At present, there are 48 name spaces of .th SLD registered. Some such examples are "teda.th," Trusted Electronic Document Authority project under the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (Public Organization) or ETDA and "ku.th," Kasetsart University. THNIC Foundation has utilized donations previously received in accordance with the original objectives, including the Bangkok Neutral Internet Exchange project, (BKNIX), that has recently been quite successful with 9 members, as well as three Content Delivery Networks (CDN), and most recently, CommunityDNS and Akamai Technology. Another objective is the Net2Home project that has done research on firmware for connecting WiFi pocket routers together to build community networks. This can reduce cable wiring, reduce costs, and easy to be transported. This technology has already been deployed in Thailand's northern border areas such as Mae Sod and Tasongyang, Tak province. The new round of SLD.th will be limited to commercial, state enterprises, trademarks, names of major projects or events organized by private or governmental organizations. The objective is to raise donations for the Net2Home project, which is one of many projects under the THNIC Foundation that focus on developing internet infrastructure and increasing the number of Thai "netizens." All will be expected to have positive affect economic development, education, and society as a whole in the context of local communities.
Interested persons can submit domain name applications and fees in the amount of 10,000 baht per domain name to THNIC Co., ltd, from August 1 to September 12, 2016. Successful applications will be announced on September 13, 2016, and successful applicants can proceed to donate funds for domain name registrations in the amount of one million baht per domain name for a lifetime registration, or alternatively one hundred thousand baht per domain, per year directly to THNIC Foundation.
