Students from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) had an opportunity to interact with senior leadership of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and participate in IPCC outreach activities during the two-day IPPC event organized in Bangkok on 14-15 October 2016.
A doctoral student of Energy from Pakistan, Ms. Tooba Masood and a Master's student in Gender and Development Studies from Cambodia, Ms. Raksa Sok, participated in the IPCC Media workshop and press conference that was led by Jonathan Lynn, Head of Communications, IPCC.
Dr. Shobhakar Dhakal, Associate Professor of Energy from AIT, was among the three IPCC scientists who spoke about climate science at the media event. Dr. Shobhakar presented options for mitigation; while Dr. Abdalah Mokssit, Secretary of the IPCC presented the basic issues in climate science, and IPCC author Dr. Seree Supratid spoke about Impacts and future risks.
Thirteen AIT students hailing from eight countries also participated in the outreach event on "IPCC Role, Activities and Findings," where they were introduced to IPCC role and activities by Dr. Youba Sokona, Vice-Chair of the IPCC. They also participated in the deliberations of the three working groups of IPCC. Dr. Shobhakar, who was the coordinating lead author in IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report served as a panelist where he presented key findings of urbanization, cities and climate change mitigation.
Participating students from AIT included Ms. Raksa Sok (Cambodia) from Gender and Development Studies; Mr. Bui Phan Quoc Nghia (Vietnam) from Climate Change; Ms. Laphongngern Thepphavong (Laos), Mr. Raunak Thapa and Ms. Sharmin Rauf (Nepal) from MBA-Energy Business; Ms. Tooba Masood (Pakistan), Ms. Samidhi Wickremesinghe (Sri Lanka), Mr. Bhavin Pradhan and Mr. Pratik Karki (Nepal), Mr. Piriya Poakorkeatikul (Thailand), and Mr. Rohit C Unni (India) from Energy; and Mr. Rehan Haq and Ms. Sobia Asghar (Pakistan) from Natural Resource Management. Rehan, Sobia and Tooba are doctoral students, while the other students are pursuing a Master's program at AIT.
