Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) has cooperated with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), International Copper Association (ICA) under the funding of European Union (EU) in order to deal with the global warming issue with ASEAN SHINE project. This project is an initial project in the ASEAN regions aiming to develop the testing standards and energy efficiency.
On November 30, Mr.Danai Eakkamol, Deputy Director General of Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), Ministry of Energy, inaugurated a seminar held in cooperation with International Copper Association (ICA) in the topics of experience exchange and launching successful results of ASEAN SHINE project during the past 4 years.
The ASEAN Shine project is an integrated strategic framework. It was initiated for public interest in the ASEAN region. If this project is successful, there will be a big change in the ASEAN market and it will promote the efficiency of electrical devices and standardize in the high level for the region where the economy is achieving the leap growth. This project will also inconsistently facilitate the international trades in the region and promote the integration of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and change the ASEAN into a free trade community within the member countries. There will be knowledge and expertise exchange to the neighbor countries especially the industry related to the energy efficiency.
The ASEAN Shine project was created in 2010 from the cooperation between the International Copper Association and Environmental Project of the European Union. This project aims to reduce the global warming by determining the standards of energy efficiency of air conditioners in ASEAN to be in the same levels between the period from 2013-2016. There are many successful activities carried out under the ASEAN Shine project, for example, as follows:
• Standardization of the testing system to be consistent throughout ASEAN, in accordance with ISO 5151-2010;
• Certification of regional plans focusing on efficiency standardization of minimum energy performance standards to be consistent throughout ASEAN, in the 33th Conference of ASEAN Energy Ministers;
• At the moment, the ministries responsible for energy in the ASEAN countries are drafting a national plan to be consistent with objectives and goals of the regional plans.
• Training and Seminars were held to enhance knowledge to the air conditioner manufacturers and testing rooms around ASEAN region.
This year, an application called "AC Select" was created under the ASEAN Shine project. This application helps the consumers choose the most efficient air conditioner and aware of the economic value. This program is also used for training the sales persons and introduced to the public in the ASEAN countries.
ASEAN Shine project is considered as a great step to the golden age of ASEAN, being the leader of energy and environmental stability. In this age where the dynamic is moving toward Asia, it is a responsibility of everyone including fund grantors, project directors, government, manufacturers and the pubic (consumers) to cooperate from their part for the success of the nation.
