Bangkok--30 May--Spark Communications
Nokia showcased its latest network innovation at Nokia Innovation Day 2017 in Bangkok. The highlight of Nokia's demonstrations included 4.9G AirScale technology to achieve 3 Gbps peak rates that will allow operators to dramatically enhance their network performance, densify 'megacity' deployments and drive-much needed capacity on path to 5G. Along with 4.9G AirScale demo, Nokia also presented IoT use cases; smart home for elder care, connected lamp post, family tracker, and network security.
Key takeaways:
Megatrend that are changing the world
Dramatic shifts in technology will impact our daily live, how businesses work and connect with customers, and how industries and public services run. Six global megatrends are driving extreme innovation in how networks are designed, deployed, managed, and utilized:
Network, computer and storage: broadband everywhere: a distributed cloud, near infinite storage, and a supercomputer in everyone's pocket is increasingly becoming a reality.
Internet of Things: Gartner estimated that there will be 20 billion connected devices in 2020* Growing connected devices, gadgets, sensors, and things will drive huge benefits for both individuals and businesses
Augmented intelligence: new tools that will assist us in decision making. Task automation will allow us to be much more effective.
Human and machine interaction: virtual and augmented reality, new interfaces based on voice and gestures, implantable chips, and "smart" things of many kinds - such as clothing - will reshape how we interact with machines, just as touch screens did in the past.
Social and trust economics: the sharing economy will continue to expand. The nature of money will be disrupted by digital currencies making trust and security essential.
Digitalization and ecosystems: businesses will continue to digitize their operations wherever possible. This will expand into the worlds of consumer and biology with radical new technologies such as 3D printing of organs for transplant.
The networks of today simply cannot meet the performance requirements of the future, and a transformation – in scale and in kind – is needed: a new system that is more efficient, more agile,
Nokia Demonstration
Connected Lamp Post
Demonstration of one of the 'smart cities' live market trials and proofs of concept that make city smarter and safer for its residence. Connected Lamp Post includes various features ranging from WiFi HotSpot, digital signage that contains information such as traffic data, alerts, advertising, air quality sensors, and real-time crowd behavior direction and analysis.
Smart Home for elder care
With 16% of world population will be over 60 years old by 2030**, the need for senior care and assisted living continues to grow significantly. The demonstration shows how operators can leverage the Nokia Smart Home Gateway to expand services into the Smart Home and enable the safer and more secure environment for the elderly. Components include home automation, home security and healthcare. Nokia also offers device that can provide both high speed network connectivity and connectivity inside the home. An integrated solution that requires only one device in the home reduces CPE farms, wiring and power consumption.
Family Tracker
Based on cloud-hosted Nokia IMPACT platform, tracking of family members and vehicles are precise, reliable and secure. Features include for example real time GPS tracking, microphone and speaker to make a call, panic button, which when pressed, will send SOS alarm with its location, geo-fencing with alerts and notification.
Nokia End-point Security
Recent ransomware attacks that affected hundreds of thousands of computers at hospitals, universities, and telecommunications companies around the world showed how fragile today's infrastructures are.
Nokia showcased NetGuard Endpoint Security (NES) that offers protection for fixed, mobile, and IoT devices with a network-based anti-malware solution. With NES, network operator will be able to detect malware, minimize its impact on the subscriber experience, and generate revenue by providing a superior protection service.
Nokia update
Nokia generated €23.6 billion in net sales in 2016 (after acquisition of Alcatel Lucent) compared to €12.5 billion in 2015. Nokia has started 2017 just as strongly, managing to maintain its gross margin, and achieving its strongest ever quarter for its Networks business.
In first quarter of 2017, Nokia has enjoyed some other great successes so far, including signing its largest-ever contract in Latin America with consortium ALTAN Redes to build a major mobile broadband network in Mexico.
Other significant milestones in Q1 2017 include the launch of 5G FIRST at Mobile World Congress and theintroduction of the industry's first telco digital assistance Nokia MIKA, and a global IoT network grid as a managed service as well as the acquisition of Comptel, a specialist in orchestration, data processing, intelligent customer engagement applications and service monetization.
According to Dell'Oro's Mobility Report for Q1 2017, Nokia is ranked number one in LTE.
