Bangkok--16 May--Tesco Lotus
Tesco Lotus is committed to offering healthier choices for customers through new product developments that focus on making food healthier, while maintaining the great taste and the famous Tesco Lotus affordable prices. All bakery items under the Tesco brand are now free from trans fat.
Ms. Salinla Seehaphan, Corporate Affairs Director, Tesco Lotus, said: "Tesco Lotus is committed to offering high quality products at affordable prices for our customers, as well as making it easier for customers to live a healthier lifestyle. Using the Healthy@Heart approach to product development, we have now eliminated trans fat from all of our bakery items including freshly baked croissants, donuts, and a variety of breads, while maintaining the same great taste and affordable prices, allowing customers to be able to live more healthily with no extra costs.
"We have found that customers are increasingly conscious of taking care of their health by eating nutritious food that comes from reliable sources, is safe, and of high quality. That's why Tesco Lotus has developed a variety of heatlhier choices to cater to customers' needs. We recently introduced Tesco brand carbonated soft drinks with reduced sugar. The drinks – some of the first in Thailand to receive the Healthy Choice badge – contain less than 6 grams of sugar per 100 mililetres. Despite the lower amount of sugar and calories, the drinks are just as tasty and refreshing. In addition to that, we have now successfully eliminated trans fat from all 135 plus Tesco bakery items. By working closely with our suppliers and manufacturers, we have reformulated the products by replacing shortening and margarine that contains trans fat, well ahead of the Thai Food and Drugs Administration's impending ban on trans fat. All Tesco bakery items are now free from trans fat, taste just as good, and are offered at the same affordable prices as before."
Since the beginning of 2018, Tesco Lotus has introduced a variety of healthier options across product categories, including:
- Fresh food: high quality and safe fruits and vegetables sourced from reliable and certified farms; ready-to-eat cut fruits as healthy snacks.
- Bakery: trans fat free bakery compliant with the USFDA trans fat regulation containing less than 0.5 g. trans fat per serving.
- Dry grocery food: low sugar carbonated soft drinks containing less than 6 g. of sugar per 100 ml.; low glycaemic index (low GI) rice as a healthier choice for diabetics and those watching their weight. The low GI rice is available at all Tesco Lotus hypermarkets from May 15, 2018 onwards.
"With our healthier choice products, we are determined that they have to be healthy, tasty and affordable. By achieving all three factors, we hope that we will be able to help Thais live a healthier lifestyle more easily, in line with Tesco Group's value that 'every little help makes a big difference'," Salinla concluded.
