To mark World Oceans Day, Singha Estate PCL, in collaboration with allies in Suntowers building, has launched the "Sea You Tomorrow" Campaign to promote reduction of 'one time use' plastic usage and in an attempt to stop urban waste goes to the ocean. Various activities have also been organized around Suntowers community to inspire office workers, vendors, and people in the area to change their plastic consumption behavior.
Mr. Naris Cheyklin, Chief Executive Officer of Singha Estate Public Company Limited, stated, "Singha Estate's philosophy for sustainable development is to maintain the balance and foster sustainability in every community that we become a part of. The company has organized a number of marine conservation and restoration projects because it recognizes the importance of natural resources and their value for Thailand and its communities. We have found, however, that restoration addresses only negative consequences but not the root cause; at the heart of conservation is protection. To conserve natural resources effectively, we need to join hands and protect the environment in the first place, which will facilitate subsequent restoration initiatives. One of the most pressing issues for marine environment is plastic waste. 80% of this oceans garbage comes from urban communities, and Thailand is the world's sixth largest oceans garbage producer. It is an urgent issue both for Thailand and the world."
For this year's World Oceans Day, Singha Estate sets out to raise awareness about the causes and impacts of marine waste. To this end, the company has joined forces with its allies in Suntowers to launch the "Sea You Tomorrow" Campaign with the hope of encouraging Suntowers community to reduce their 'one time use' plastic consumption. Aimed at the officer workers in Suntowers, vendors in the area, and the general public and joined by over 10,000 participants, encouraging them to reduce plastic use as well as adopt appropriate waste disposal and sorting methods. To this end, a range of activities readily accessible to all sexes and ages have been organized, including exhibitions and talks, as well as the 21-Days Challenge, an activity where the participants can demonstrate their stance against single-use plastics and collect points for reducing their plastic consumption on a dedicated mobile application and RVM (Reverse Vending Machine), PET bottle, Aluminum Can recycling machine, throughout a period of 21 days.
"What we expect to achieve through the campaign is to create a pleasant environment for the office community in Suntowers building, cultivate public-mindedness, raise awareness about the deleterious impacts of plastic waste and marine waste, as well as sustainably alter public behavior. We hope to successfully encourage the general public to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics, opt for canvas totes and other reusable containers in their daily life, and spread their knowledge of appropriate waste management to their families, friends, and people in their circles, which will in turn help expand our green communities. I believe that great changes will arise from the small steps that we have taken together today," added Mr. Naris.
