Bangkok--5 Nov--Faculty of Music, Silpakorn University
In November Bangkok audiences will have the rare opportunity to see and hear two fascinating concerts which feature musical instruments that are not often heard outside their countries of origin. Firstly, on Tuesday November 13th at the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel at 7.30pm two professional Indian musicians will perform a series of compositions together on the Sitar and Tabla. The Sitar is a plucked stringed instrument, originating from the Indian subcontinent. Used widely throughout the Indian subcontinent, the sitar became popularly known in the wider world through the works of Ravi Shankar, beginning in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the 1960s, the instrument featured in songs by bands such as The Beatles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones and others. Performing on this wonderfully colourful instrument will be Anupama Bhagwat, who is one of the top sitar players in India and one of the most brilliant sitar players of her generation. The Tabla is a percussion instrument originating also from the Indian subcontinent, consisting of a pair of drums, used in traditional, classical, popular and folk music. The instrument will be played by the well-established and famous musician Rahul Pophali who has performed in more than 1000 concerts of Indian Classical and World music over the last 20 years, in India and around the world, including performances in USA, Australia, Poland, Norway and Canada. What a wonderfully rare opportunity this will be!
Later in the month on Wednesday November 28th at the Yamaha Music Hall, 4th floor, in the Siam Motors Building adjacent to BTS station national Stadium at 7.30pm there will be another rare opportunity, this time to hear the fabulous sounds of the bandaneon, a kind of concertina originating from Argentina and Uruguay. The program will be entirely devoted to the famous Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla whose 'nuevo tango' works are now inspiring audiences world-wide and who is regarded as the greatest exponent of this form of traditional Argentinian music. This exciting music will be performed by musician Daniel Ruggiero, bandoneonist and composer from Buenos Aires, a founding member of the world famous Argentinian contemporary tango group Quasimodo Trio and who has performed and recorded tango music and his own compositions all over the world. He will be joined by Thailand's eminent virtuoso violinist, Tasana Nagavajara and by Panyaphat Wongwechwiwat on violoncello.
What could be a more interesting and delightful way to spend a couple of evenings in November listening to relatively unknown instruments played by experts from their countries of origin – and supported by two of Thailand's own celebrated musicians! Both concerts are priced at 600 baht with 100 baht for students with ID.For further details of both concerts and for reservations, please contact:
