IKEA has teamed up with famous designers in every field around the world emphasizing its vision: "To create a better everyday life for the many people." Their current collaboration with Virgin Abloh, the world-renowned creative designer and founder of the OFF-WHITE street brand, marks an exciting trend with the design of the new and unique "MARKERAD" collection. It is simple, but classy and powerful, adding an artful vibe that turns familiar items in our daily lives into outstandingly designed works including a pillow, chair, bedframe, table, mirror, cabinet, clock, rug, picture frame and carrier bag packed in a multi-functional platform. The collection was inspired by young millennials who want their first "home" to truly reflect their identity and individuality.
The MARKERAD collection, a collaboration between Virgil and IKEA, observed modern living among the new generation who are creating their first homes – whether living alone, as couples, or in co-living spaces, to gain a true understanding of their demands by offering a combination of modern and contemporary designs.
Henrik Most, Creative Leader at IKEA, noted that, "When we look at millennials, we can see that they have rejected the 'normal' way of living. Rather than separating an apartment into different spaces, like the living room, the bedroom, and the work room, for them, all activities take place in one room. This challenges the whole idea of a 'home.' That's why we don't limit ourselves to a certain way of working and collaborating with designers. Many people may find it strange that we're working with Virgil. But for us, he represents working across aesthetic borders, because he isn't limiting himself to being only a fashion designer. Virgil combines the aesthetics in premium art, cultural diversity, and furniture perfectly in the same melting pot."
In describing the design of the MARKERAD collection, Virgil Abloh said, "It's been the most rigorous of any design project I've been a part of, but also a great opportunity to work with a talented team to create excellent work. We've been exploring millennials' first homes, doing research and conducting home visits to get a well-rounded understanding of their thoughts and needs. I want each item to bring people a sense of pride, and I want the great designs to be the biggest reason why you want to get these products. The essence of the project we're working on is about the millennial spirit. Function is specific to every individual, but the ethos of the collection is to add an artful quality to anonymous objects. My first home, for example, was carefully thought through and very empty. You eventually come to realize that making a space feel like a home takes on an intangible quality."
For the launch of the MARKERAD collection in Thailand, Roy Dewar, Store Manager at IKEA Bangna, said, "IKEA and Virgil fans worldwide have been waiting for this collection since the announcement of the collaboration at IKEA Sweden two years ago. IKEA customers in Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia have the privilege of owning this collection on October 31, while other IKEA stores around the world will release the collection on the first of November. We are offering every item in this collection to our Thai fans and hope to get some great feedback. In addition, we organized the display of this collection at the front of the store so that people can get a real sense of its design and inspiration, and how it reflects on the different identities of millennials today."
