Bangkok--5 Nov--Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Improper use of medical equipment and unsafe practices in hospital can result in accidents and cause injury to healthcare workers while undertaking their tasks as well as increase maintenance costs and lead to the necessity to procure medical equipment. In addition, such accidents usually result in sickness, stress and transmission of disease from patients to those caring for them. Improving Occupational Safety for Healthcare Workers in Public Hospitals in Thailand, a project being implemented by GIZ Thailand in collaboration with B. Braun Thailand and the Infusion Nurse Network of Thailand, organized training in Safe Infusion Therapy at Maharaj Nakhonsithammarat Hospital on 21-22 October 2019. The training aimed to improve the safety of both patients and healthcare workers and reduce injuries and infection while receiving or giving infusion therapy. The training covered treatment for patients who suffer from the complications of infusion treatment, infusion incident prevention and the 4 practice stations, namely 1) Peripheral Intravenous infusion (PIV) and dressing; 2) Central Venous Catheter (CVC) dressing and scrubbing the hub; 3) Insertion; and 4) Flushing and locking. This training helped improve the occupational safety of healthcare workers, one of the quality indicators of the national healthcare system, and a goal that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Thai Government are aiming to achieve to ensure a sustainable healthcare system.
