Bangkok--19 Nov--ESCAP-SCAS Almost 25 years on from the adoption of a game changing global agreement to achieve the rights of women and girls - the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, progress on gender equality and women's empowerment has been slow and uneven across the Asia-Pacific region. Persisting gender norms and stereotypes, as well as limited gender capacities, are among the critical bottlenecks to achieving transformational change, with negative implications to the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on the Beijing+25 Review, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, will provide a platform for more than 500 government and civil society representatives to come together to explore policy options and strategies, including innovative approaches, towards realizing gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
