Alice Potter, Country Chairman and General Manager – Products, Chevron (Thailand) Limited and Suripong Tantiyanon, Country Manager for Visa Thailand celebrated the launch of contactless payments across all Caltex stations nationwide.
Visa, the world's leader in digital payments, today announced that Caltex has become the first petrol station chain in Thailand to offer contactless payments at all of its stations nationwide. Motorists in Thailand will now be able to make cashless payments without their card ever leaving their hand at more than 370 Caltex outlets.
The introduction of contactless payments at Caltex petrol stations will provide a faster, more convenient and secure payment experience for motorists looking to re-fuel or purchase goods. For Caltex, accepting contactless payments will result in a faster payment process, reduced checkout queues and greater operational efficiency.
Suripong Tantiyanon, Country Manager for Visa Thailand, said: "Visa and Caltex have a shared vision in making payments easier for consumers. For that reason, we are excited to introduce Visa contactless acceptance to its petrol stations across Thailand for the first time. We hope our collaboration with Caltex will ignite greater awareness of contactless
payments among consumers while increasing the contactless acceptance footprint across the country."
Thai consumers are familiar with cashless payment methods and have a growing appetite for seamless payment experiences, in particular going contactless. Based on Visa's latest Consumer Payment Attitudes Study, the majority of Thai consumers (90 percent) are aware of the contactless payments using cards, including credit, debit and prepaid. More importantly, nearly four in five Thai consumers (79 percent) are interested in making contactless payments.
"At Caltex, we are committed to offer excellent fuel products and services. We are always looking for ways to enhance motorists' journey and make every visit a pleasurable experience. Being the first fuel service station brand in Thailand to accept contactless payments across its whole network nationwide is a major milestone for us. In today digital era, consumers tend to carry less cash and credit cards become more of a preferred payment option at Caltex fuel service stations, we are confident they will be quick to embrace the use of contactless payments for faster service, enabling them to get back on the road quicker. The contactless payment offered at Caltex fuel service stations in partnership with Visa is part of our "Smart Platform" strategy under "Smart Value for All" growth vision to drive and sustain our business growth," said Alice Potter, Country Chairman and General Manager – Products, Chevron (Thailand) Limited, the marketer of Caltex brand.
Contactless payments enable cardholders to "tap to pay" using bank-issued Visa credit, debit and prepaid cards. One of the major advantages of contactless is that customers can make cashless payment without the card ever leaving their hand during the transaction. In addition, from 1 January 2020 onwards, customers will no longer need to sign the payment slip for transactions below or equal to 1,500 baht. Thereby allowing them to spend the least amount of time in the petrol station and get from point A to point B faster.
"Our goal is to increase our contactless acceptance footprint in the country so that more Thais can 'tap to pay' with their Visa cards. We believe Thais will embrace the benefits of contactless payments as we continue to partner with merchants across a variety of industries to expand access to digital payments and support the country's transition into a less-cash society," concluded Suripong.
