KTC launches the 2nd year of “Education for Self Empowerment and Sustainable Growth” Bangkok--23 Jul--Krungthai Card KTC jointly with Setsatian and Thung Maha Mek schools further the “KTC Offers Education for Self Empowerment and Sustainable Growth” project for the second year to push youths to build upon their capabilities for self-improvement beyond physical limitations. KTC endorses a tripartite way of knowledge sharing and thereby creates a network of knowledge that gets passed down for posterity as well as “KTC PROUD” cash cardmembers. The teaching curriculum conforms to the Ministry of Education’s five bodies of knowledge for career educational strategy to create long-term sustainability in society. Mrs. Sudpratana Damrongchaitham, Vice President - Human Resources Organization Development, “KTC”, reveals, “KTC has been consistently focusing on the sharing of useful knowledge with the community, members and society; especially professional development to generate income for sustainable growth and to develop the capabilities of Thai youths to have equal quality both in terms of educational opportunities and learning support for further application in various fields in accordance with the concept of sustainable development, covering economic, society and environment aspects. KTC has initiated the "Education for Self Empowerment and Sustainable Growth” project in 2019 at Setsatian School with the belief that physical disabilities are not an obstacle to learning if given proper development opportunities. KTC jointly prepared students to grow accustomed to becoming self-reliant through means of sufficiency agriculture which is the root of the livelihood of Thai people. This was done through learning from real hands-on experience, and developing the knowledge gained to build a career, generate income, and to manage finances for a sustainable happy life, as well as the ability to create a knowledge network for the society later on." "In the year 2020, the project continuously expands bodies of knowledge by sharing knowledge from generation to generation (Train the Trainer) taught by teachers and students at Setsatian School who are sign language speakers together with speakers from the Pho Thong Mushroom Farm. The project targets two groups, including 1) Thung Maha Mek School for the Deaf, which is a special education school for students with hearing impairment in Grade 2 - 6, and 2) “KTC PROUD” cash cardmembers. Organic Mushroom Cultivation Teaching Course for Career Development in 2020, which conforms to the Ministry of Education’s five bodies of knowledge for careers educational strategy, can be divided as follows: Farming Occupation Group - learn to mix and create mushroom compost / steam cabinet / drop microbe / 10/20/30 days mycelial yield / open mushroom lump / mushroom watering and care / mushroom selection and trimming / care to prepare for new yield. KTC also built a mushroom growing house in the school as a laboratory used in teaching and learning. Industrial Occupation Group - processing mushrooms into food / create new products. Commerce Professional Group - learn how to generate an income-expense account / perform financial planning, Creative Careers Group - package design, branding, and presentation, and Service Occupation Group. Teacher Saijai Sangkapan, Deputy Director for Academic Affairs, Setsatian School for the Deaf Under the Royal Patronage, states, "In this 2020 academic year, Setsatian School is pleased to share its success towards sustainability to the Thung Maha Mek School for the Deaf to organize a complete learning process for the organic mushroom cultivation project for a livelihood through tripartite cooperation. Students and teacher personnel from Setthasathien School will join as sign language speakers to transfer knowledge and experience gained from year 1 with many achievements that can be separated as follows: 1. Success with Learners students are happy and learned every step in mushroom cultivation through hands-on experience. They are responsible, understand the roles and responsibilities, have self-discipline, and have developed with quality. They have attained basic knowledge in creating self-reliant careers, have a positive attitude, have adjusted to a new way of life, and have learned and understood the idea of sufficiency. 2. Success with Teachers and Personnel changes resulting from knowledge gleaned from project implementation led to an innovation of the teaching model based on the project. Creation of new knowledge and new food menus resulted from production in the mushroom cultivation project. This included the further development and invention of food menus made from raw mushroom materials, such as mushroom cookies, fermented mushroom, mushroom waffles, baked mushrooms with butter, mushroom crackers, mushroom pizzas, etc., and adding value in crops produced by the project which amounted to 320 kilograms to create income. 3. Success at School built a strong network that became a foundation for quality development in learners to achieve a goal. The crops produced from the project was used as ingredients in a lunch project to reduce lunch expenses. The school had more learning resources and was able to fully expand target groups from high school students to students at all levels. The mushroom growing house has been a place for study trips for students and the general public. In addition, the school had many teaching materials which were produced from educational concepts and learning processes of mushroom cultivation that were suitable for students and have been practically using in teaching.” "In addition, with the current situation of the COVID-19 virus epidemic, learning activities in the 'Education for Self Empowerment and Sustainable Growth’ project that teaches complete organic mushroom farming for a livelihood in a sufficiency agriculture way, will help promote students to have leadership qualities and learn to adjust to a new way of life to better prepare for the changing social conditions and succeed in living happily and safely." Teacher Wirat Poolek, Deputy Director, Thung Maha Mek School for the Deaf, states, “The 'Education for Self Empowerment and Sustainable Growth’ project allows our students to learn about a career in mushroom cultivation complete from production, care, harvesting, selling and creating products, which students can develop into careers in the future. We believe that experts from Setsatian School and Pho Thong Mushroom Farm will help us broaden our outlook in a career with mushrooms in the most useful way. The Thung Maha Mek School for the Deaf will try to learn, create jobs, and build upon it to the best of its abilities to enable students to get the most out of this program. Lastly, we hope to pass on the knowledge network to other educational institutions to be in line with the project name, 'Education for Self Empowerment and Sustainable Growth’.” Ms. Wachiraporn Thongjamnoong, one of the student experts from Setsatian School for the Deaf Under the Royal Patronage, comments, “I got a chance to know people from KTC for the first time from growing vegetables in Bang Khae. A year later, we went to visit the mushroom farm, which was my first time seeing an abundance of mushrooms. I was even more excited when I learned that we got to grow mushrooms and took care of them once we returned to school. Us Grade 10-12 students were eager to learn. We collectively divided our duties to look after the crops. The whole school got excited again when the mushrooms in our building produced maximum crops. That day, we deliciously ate mushroom dishes made from crops that we grew by ourselves, and we also practiced selling mushrooms. Furthermore, we gained knowledge of mushroom processing, how to record accounting for income and expenses, making packages to put mushrooms for sale, and designing logos which was taught by lovely contacts from KTC. The teacher also taught us to learn how to work on real projects. We learned with pleasure and fun. Most importantly, this learning process has made us establish the "Big Book" innovation to pass on knowledge about mushrooms to the next generations. In addition, we also helped each other process mushroom products which many others have tried and loved.” "We are very pleased to know that this year we will have the opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with friends and children at the Thung Maha Mek School for the Deaf.
