Nowadays, world leading technology companies are pushing forward 5G network, which will not only provide an unprecedented speed of connection, but also help push new opportunities for businesses, generate more revenue, and help local business sectors to recover faster from the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, this may also be the answer for Thailand in achieving “Thailand 4.0” transformation and provide an opportunity for Thailand in recovery to take the leading position among ASEAN countries.
Mr. Puttipong Punnakanta, Digital Economy and Society Minister, highlighted on the important role of 5G for Thailand and stated how “5G will change all of our lifestyle and Thailand governance, and it will not only drive the mobile network, but Thai government is also prepared to leverage this technology to build smart cities and adapting it for use across different sectors such as manufacturing, education and agriculture, in particular. The government aims to develop 5G network to be available nationwide because we considered data as the most crucial factor in market competition, and it’s also important to allow us to compete at an international level.” Mr. Puttipong Punnakanta, Digital Economy and Society Minister
DES Minister went on to give a clearer example on how we can adapt 5G for use in government sectors, including 5G usage in public health sector during the COVID-19 pandemic, where Thailand used AI solution from Huawei to fight against the virus, leveraging the database of CT scan results consisting of more than ten thousand of China’s confirmed cases to compare with the CT scan results in Thailand to diagnose the risk of COVID-19 infection for Thai patients with 96% accuracy rate. More importantly, it also helps reduce risk and increase safety for Thai medical staffs.
Today, devices that support 5G usage are not limited to smartphones anymore. It also includes various IT devices for consumers, for enterprises, and for the manufacturing sector. Mr. Woragarn Likhitdechasakdi, Deputy Chief Technology Officer of Carrier Network, Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd., said that devices with 5G support will become more diverse, such as 5G smartphones, 5G CPE devices that convert 5G to Wi-Fi signal to maximize connectivity, wearable devices, VR/AR glasses, and 5G modules that are used with robot and industrial machines. These devices will pioneer limitless opportunities for businesses.
“In 2020, we will see an increasing number of mobile products that support 5G technology. At the same time, the price range of these 5G-enabled devices will be lower. With this current trend, 5G users in Thailand are expected to grow and expand in number. Apart from improving network connectivity and enhancing smart industries, 5G technology could also generate new revenue in 3 ways; through better user experience from faster connectivity and lower latency, through higher data usage on applications and new online media, and through the support of much higher number of connectivity that will lead to more customers on the network.”
Mr. Woragarn also addressed that Thailand is quite advanced in adopting and utilizing 5G technology, with proven efforts to drive 5G development in the past five to six months after the 5G spectrum auction was finalized. Such accomplishments could be seen through the wide use of several new solutions in public health sector to counter COVID-19 pandemic, including the use of Cloud and AI on 5G network in patient diagnosis, the installation of 5G network which helps enhance connectivity and operation in the hospital, or the use of 5G-powered robotic technology to handle medical delivery and logistics. 5G healthcare adaptation can also be further utilized in other formats such as remote surgery, teleconsultation between medical personnel and between doctors and patients, or even the use of robots in disinfection and patient diagnosis in the future.

If Thailand can push forward the “5G ecosystem” that consists of network operators, solution providers, vertical industry, local partners, as well as government and industry alliance, these players will collaboratively help spearhead 5G development in the country, which will greatly benefit industrial sectors, and promote digital skills among the workforce. These elements will eventually pave the way to a complete Digital Thailand. At the end of the day, 5G is not an innovation that could be driven alone, but the collaboration among the real users is key in bringing the true potential of 5G to life.” Mr. Woragarn concluded.
