Adoption surges in rural areas including Songkhla, Prayao, Satun as AirPay provides shoppers across Thailand with easy access to digital payments.

This was highlighted by a 30 times increase in AirPay transactions in the first hour of 12 December compared to an average day, as people turned to digital payments for its convenience and ease of use.

The most popular categories shopped with AirPay were Home & Living, Beauty & Personal Care, and Stationery, Books & Music, showing that people became more comfortable with using digital payments for various essential and lifestyle needs.

Key trends for the use of AirPay on 12 December included:

  • Growing digital adoption in smaller cities: Songkhla, Prayao and Satun saw the greatest uplift in AirPay transactions on Shopee compared to an average day, showing that AirPay is offering underserved users easier access to digital payments.
  • AirPay adoption increases across different generations: Millennials aged 18 to 34 continued using AirPay to conveniently shop for various needs such as exercise wear, storage organisers, doormats. Importantly, Gen X users above 50 saw a surge in adoption, with orders paid via AirPay increasing by 15 times from an average day.

AirPay bridges offline and online retail
AirPay also created a positive impact for businesses offline. On 12 December, AirPay's offline partner merchants participating in Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale saw transactions increase 3.5 times compared to an average day.

Across the Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale period, the number of Scan & Pay vouchers claimed on AirPay also grew 5.5 times from 11.11, showing that Thais are rapidly becoming more comfortable with using the digital wallet for both online and offline purchases.
