Huawei Donates Labour SIM Cards to Help Empower Persons with Disabilities and the Most Vulnerable During Pandemic

Huawei Technologies (Thailand) Co. Ltd., presented 500 Labour SIM cards to the Department of Skill Development (DSD) under the Ministry of Labour, to be distributed to persons with disabilities and workers whose lives were disrupted by the pandemic.

This donation will allow people from all walks of life and in vulnerable situations to benefit from distance education services offered by the DSD, as part of its educational skills development plan. Huawei aims to support the exposure of more and more people from disadvantaged communities to digital technology by providing them with Labour SIM cards that allow affordable access to the Internet so they can explore the digital world or connect with teachers and trainers for virtual classes.

The initiative also underscores the partnership between Huawei and the Thai government to encourage accessible digital education and promote the development of IT skills.  The creation of jobs highly in-demand and a rich ICT talent ecosystem will help move Thailand towards the 4.0 era.

During the ceremony held at the Ministry of Labour, Prof. Narumon Pinyosinwat, Deputy Labour Minister, explained the government's strategy to provide online skill training to vulnerable members of society.  "People with disabilities and those who lost their jobs due to the pandemic can get through these challenging times by gaining digital knowledge and skills that will enable them to find high-value jobs and improve their lives," she said. "I would like to thank Huawei for its important role in bringing online educational opportunities to the Thai people, so they can develop skills that will help build a healthy digital economy."

Mr Abel Deng, CEO of Huawei Thailand, said, "We have been working hand in hand with the Ministry of Labour to strive for inclusion in the digital era. Skills development can break down barriers, so that more people can become part of the digital ecosystem.  We believe that no one should be left behind in the digital world, so we continuously give our full support to projects that will create future IT talents, especially those from vulnerable groups. They will contribute to the growth of the country's economy."

Following the pandemic, Huawei's focus is to open more doors in the digital world to more and more people, by developing skills that will enable them to participate in the digital society. The donation of Labour SIM cards confirms Huawei's lasting commitment in favor of digital inclusion for all Thais, and a sustainable digital talent pool that can meet growing market demand.

In addition, to support the fight against the spread of COVID-19 and keep people safe from infection, the tech giant also donated hand sanitizers, face masks, and other healthcare supplies to the Ministry of Labour. Through this contribution, Huawei seeks to help the country's workers stay healthy and secure in their jobs, and to reduce the spread of the virus in the workplace.

As a leading global provider of ICT infrastructure and smart devices with a strong local presence in Thailand for 22 years, Huawei is proactively enabling Thailand's digital transformation and is dedicated to continuously contributing social values to Thai society. To help cultivate Thailand's digital talent in the era of the new normal, Huawei initiated the Huawei ASEAN Academy (Thailand) that aims to produce 50,000 ICT talents in 5 years. In September 2020, in alignment with the Ministry of Labor's long-term job creation scheme, Huawei participated in Job Expo Thailand and promised to offer 1,000 job opportunities to boost economic recovery. More recently, it collaborated with the Digital Skill Development Academy (DISDA) of DSD, for its first online Mobile App Development Course, a learning platform that aims to enhance digital skill development for Thailand's digital talents.
