After his academic completion in Graphic Design and Advertising at Swinburne in Melbourne, Australia, Barry Owen started his career in television graphics and films at the ABC television network. He later moved on to other jobs ranging from illustration, still photography, to book design and packaging design. Then, he was coaxed into the advertising industry, starting at J. Walter Thompson (JWT) in Sydney as an Art Director.
In 1971, Barry came to Thailand and worked as an art director, photographer, and advertising practitioner for Thai Airways International. Later in 1977, he joined Ogilvy & Mather (Thailand) as a Creative Director. Barry's latest position before he decided to leave the advertising industry for good is Creative Director of Ogilvy & Mather - Asia Pacific and Head of Creative of Ogilvy & Mather (Thailand).
Barry Owen, an Australian-born creative, is the first foreigner to receive the honourable Chaweewan Award in recognition for his dedication to elevate the standard of Thailand's advertising industry throughout the past 20 years. He is highly accepted and respected among later-generation Thai creatives as the role model who worked hard for "big" ideas and "great" advertisements.
Barry has played an important role in developing and improving advertising works in Thailand. He has added the uniqueness and essence of Thailand in many advertisements -- which not only won many awards from both national and international stages, but also made Thais realize the value of their own culture. In addition, Barry has helped foster many high-quality creatives and advertising practitioners in Thailand.
