Bangkok--Nov 22--Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa
The newest hideaway in Khao Lak is the Anantara Royal Coco Palm, a 51 villa resort and spa on the shores of the pristine Bang Sak beach to the north of Khao Lak.
A member of Small Luxury Hotels, the new Anantara is spread out over 55-acres of luxuriant Bill Bensley-sculpted gardens and lagoons, tucked away in palm groves between a secluded beach and jungle-covered hills, a tranquil retreat overlooking the Andaman Sea.
Ideal for honeymooning couples or anyone looking for blissed-out escapism, this beachside haven is easily accessible from Phuket International airport, a simple one-hour’s car journey away.
The design of each of the resort’s villas was inspired by Thai tropical architecture: thatched roofs top villas which are a capacious 80-square metres, each with a large marble bathroom, double vanity, walk-in wardrobe, separate shower-room, bathtub looking onto a private garden and alfresco shower. Inside, the romance continues with a four-poster canopied bed, Thai silk cushions, Thai artefacts and artworks and a VCD player. Music and movies can be borrowed from the resort’s library.
Each of the resort’s 9 pool villas is hidden away in its own walled courtyard though sea view pool villas can be opened up to give beach views or kept closed for complete privacy. With 150 square metres to play in and marble bathrooms big enough to hold a party, the resorts pool villas are unrivalled in Khao Lak both in terms of spaciousness and privacy. Similar in d?cor to the deluxe villas, pool villas also feature DVD players and flat screen televisions.
In the gardens, the highlight is the Bill Bensley-designed pool. Overlooking the beach, the 60-metre double-infinity-edge pool has a bubble-jet bed and is lit at night by eight gas torches, which line the edge of the pool, giving a flame-edged perspective towards the sea from dusk onwards.
At the Coco Spa, four air-conditioned treatment rooms and one Thai massage sala are clustered around a secluded lotus lagoon and offer a variety of deliciously rejuvenating Mandara Spa therapies including a Coconut Delight skin nourishing treatment; a Tamarind Body Blast to nourish, revitalize and protect the skin; a tropical fruit body wrap; a Moor Mud Wrap to leave the skin toned and detoxified plus a range of relaxing massage therapies and revitalizing facials.

Not forgetting resort guests’ love of good eating, the Anantara’s intimate Baan Zinnia Italian restaurant has a menu of modern Italian cuisine with a hint of Asian influence. Created by John Lightbody, the design of Baan Zinnia, like its menu, opts for the contemporary over the traditional. Located on the edge of the resort’s tiki-torch lit central lagoon, the restaurant’s terrace juts out over the lagoon giving diners the option of moonlight dining outside or the comfort of air-conditioning inside.
Other facilities at the resort include an internet room with two computer stations with high-speed broadband access; a fitness centre with fixed and free weights plus cardiovascular equipment and a gift shop.
Khao Lak is the gateway to the Similan islands, frequently ranked as one of the world’s top 10 dive destinations. The nine islands which make up the Similans are located around 65km off the coast of Phang Nga province and were designated a Marine National Park in 1982. Famous for their white sand beaches and crystal clear blue water, the underwater world is a paradise for scuba divers with thriving reefs, soft corals and a huge diversity of marine life, including rays and turtles plus the occasional leopard shark and whale shark. The islands offer a variety of dive experiences: on the islands’ western side magnificent underwater granite archways are so completely covered with soft corals that the rock can no longer be seen while on the eastern side hard coral gardens slope down to sand.
For non-divers the Khao Lak area has numerous eco-tourism adventures from a nascent Leatherback Turtle protection programme at the Khao Lampi - Hat Thai Muang National Park to jungle treks to secluded waterfalls and beaches, kayaking, elephant trekking and bird-watching.
Rates for the resort start from US$455++ up to US$615++ for a sea view pool villa. High season is from November to April. Special rates are available in the low season. The resort is also available to hire exclusively for weddings or private parties.
