It’s a full house on day two of Bangkok fashion week. Not only are the shows packed solid with dedicated followers of fashion, the trade show itself appears quite busy although many of the visitors are simply curious bystanders.
Some of the exhibitors, especially the ones showing jewellery and accessories are even cashing in on the number of visitors by selling individual items to casual visitors to people. One such company, based here in Thailand is AKNAS who manufacture beautiful yet affordable jewellery items from stingray leather and silver. The stingray leather is piece-dyed rather than sprayed and then shaped into bracelets, rings or necklaces and combined with items of delicate costume jewellery sometimes highlighted by tiny diamantes.
The end result is attractive, elegant and very hard wearing. Stephane Mesnil director of AKNAS was quite philosophical when he said “I wish there were more buyers, so far the results have been disappointing, everybody seems to like our product but we are still after the big orders.”
In an earlier press conference, Pramote Vitayasuk, Director of the Bangkok Fashion City project and Tinakorn Asavarak the catwalk show director,
addressed the issue of foreign buyers attendance by stressing that these are “early days” and that “it is necessary to take baby steps first before we start to run.” “There are quite a few buyers here,” they said, but it’s the foreign media that are being courted at the moment. It is they who will spark more
interest abroad in Bangkok Fashion week.
