Bangkok’s visiting shopaholics are quite aware by now of an impressive new store called Playground located in Thonglor, a spacious residential suburb of this currently very fashion conscious city. What they may not know, is that Playground is producing a range of stunning garments designed by four talented young designers. Today these designers presented their work in a dramatic catwalk show in the Fashion Dome at the ongoing Bangkok Fashion Week.
The show opened with a stunning collection of very cleverly cut silk jersey dresses, reminiscent of the work of Japanese designer Yuki who was famous for his draped jersey dresses back in the 1970’s and 80’s. The dresses were all matt black sometimes relieved by the addition of sequined trims but the real interest lay in the way that huge rectangles of fabric had been cleverly draped, twisted and even knotted in order to fit the female form.
The other segments of the show were less dramatic but perhaps the clothes were more wearable, colour was used quite sparingly but when it appeared it certainly made its point especially in a bold cherry-red group of separates which looked very dramatic, yet easy and comfortable to wear.
The collection finished with a group of separates and dresses using tone-on- tone prints in shades of khaki and turquoise, and even simple mono and dichromatic prints on a variety of materials from light airy cotton voiles to more substantial linens and cottons. One very outstanding dress in tones of burnt sienna and umber was composed of overlapping layers of lace.
These four Playground youngsters are definitely worth watching in years to come.
