Who better than Glenn Close? The award-winning actress stars in Season 4 of the provocative drama series, The Shield
On AXN (Ch.19, UBC), the heart of action and adventure television, the long-awaited season 4 of The Shield is finally here in Thailand this September. This critically acclaimed series is back with a stellar cast and intense plots in its relentless pacing and action-packed episodes. Breaking the conventional formula of the cop genre in television, The Shield continues its high standard of provocative and suspenseful action in TV’s hardest-hitting cop drama.
Joining Emmy and Golden Globe Award Winner Michael Chiklis in the outstanding cast is 5 time Academy Award? nominee and 3 time Tony Award winner, Glenn Close, as Captain Monica Rawlings for the entire season 4. She effectively portrays a seasoned street cop who is as tough as the guys and is a force to be reckoned with. In fact her performance in The Shield has garnered an Emmy nomination for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Michael Chiklis comments that "Glenn does phenomenal work, and it just brings a new, fresh excitement to the whole process, particularly now that we're in our fourth season."
With three strong seasons past, The Shield averaged around 3.3 million viewers in the USA and rated fourth amongst the top cable shows in its target demographic. With its envelope-pushing content that focuses on the tension between the multi-faceted characters in the elite Strike Team, who are able to fight crime with their own set of rules, The Shield has garnered a huge following. Ricky Ow, General Manager of SPE Networks Asia says “having such a high-caliber program like The Shield on AXN further adds depth to our wow factor. The new season promises more with inclusion of Glenn Close. Her involvement is yet another recognition of the quality of the show. It will definitely be a showcase of talent, grit and twisted plots, true to AXN’s spirit of action and adventure.”
The last season ended on a volatile note when an Armenian crime mob targets the Strike Team and personal and professional conflicts are at an all-time high. Set in the harsh and morally ambiguous world of an inner city police precinct, the Farmington police district in Los Angeles, unconventional policing methods are often used and the line between good and bad is ambiguous. Season 4 begins with a big adjustment in the precinct. A new captain, Monica Rawlings (Glenn Close), is taking over and setting fresh boundaries in the police division. She treads on new grounds while trying to police the neighborhood with controversial tactics.
Glenn Close, The New Captain
Close agreed to be in The Shield, as she comments that “the writing on this show is great storytelling” and her character “has an agenda and she can’t wait to start”. Close is known for her tough-woman roles in previous landmark performances like Fatal Attraction and Stepford Wives.
For her television role, she researched the 41 previous episodes of The Shield and picked the brains of New York’s high ranking female police officers to get into her part. Her research seems to have worked as she portrays Rawlings dynamically and with attitude worthy of a feisty New York cop. Close feels that the acting in her role has been a challenge as Rawlings is a character with multi-faceted depths who has a great impact on the series.
Michael Chiklis is Vic Mackey
The cast of this gritty police drama was thrilled to learn that Close’s role in the series would extend into the whole season. This was especially so for Michael Chiklis, star of the recent film hit “Fantastic Four”. He comments that having Close in the series “raises the whole bar” for the cast and himself.
This multi-talented actor acting as Vic Mackey, Chiklis inserts more depth into the character when the Strike Team has been dissolved. Not only does Mackey have to deal with his grimy past, he has been put to a greater challenge working with Rawlings.
Besides winning an Emmy and Golden globe Award, Chiklis is also a regular face for voice-overs in animations such as ‘Spirited Away’ and ‘Heavy Gear-The Animated Series’.
It’ll be a night of back-to-back action!
