Bangkok--Aug 30--SET
The SET collaborates with the Thai Library Association (TLA) Under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to build a community library and a training center for the Klong Chan district, Bangkok. The place will be a model community library providing learning opportunities.
The SET is pleased to announce that it will join the TLA in developing the ‘Sermpunya’ community library and a training center called ‘Bann Pluk Fhun’. A MOU (memorandum of understanding) was signed between the SET and the TLA today (Aug. 29). The project will celebrate the golden jubilee of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The library and training center will take on a new contemporary look for their community facilities and are expected to be opened by December 2005.
SET President Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong said, “The library and training center will help encourage knowledge-based community activities under a modern design concept. The SET has provided THB6.5 mln. for developing this project with the TLA.
“The ‘Sermpunya’ community library will be built utilizing a similar concept to that of the SET’s Maruey Library, including a coffee shop and Internet corners. The library will be open daily from 9.00 am. — 9.00 pm. The ‘Bann Pluk Fhun’ center will be a vocational training center and provide educational counseling services. We expect the two facilities will become models for similar projects throughout Thailand,” he continued.
TLA President Prof. Khunying Maenmas Chavalit said, “The TLA admired the SET for its support in developing the quality of life and the intellectual capabilities of Thai youth. The project will provide learning opportunities for Thailand’s youth outside the classroom.”
The Sermpunya library is located on Akarn Songkroh Road, Bangkapi, Bangkok, covering 4 floors of the TLA building. The library facilities include a coffee corner, an Internet corner, a convenience store, a resource center, and a multi-purpose area equipped with, for example, a sound system, computers and a projector. It is estimated that there will be about 300 visitors daily from Klong Chan and nearby communities.
Meanwhile, the ‘Bann Pluk Fhun’ training center will also be developed to promote more learning opportunities outside the classroom. This center will be located near the Sermpunya library. The services provided will include vocational training, counseling, travel information and study tours.
