Make sure you are fast enough to get a seat to cheer Thai designers at the upcoming World of WearableArt Awards 2005 in Wellington, New Zealand.
After an overwhelm success by three young Thai designers at the World of WearableArt Awards last year, 20 new entries from Thailand will be walking graciously on the same stage this September. The only difference is the competition this year is moved from Nelson to Wellington, New Zealand capital city.
This year's categories are Illumination Illusion - Black & White, Open Section, Avant Garde, Children's Section, Bizarre Bra, Shades of Grey Section and South Pacific. Last year, our young designers won first prizes in Bizarre Bra and Children's Section, and second prize in Reflective Surfaces.
The 20 entries are selected from more than 300 garment entries from around the world. Each garment is viewed by a panel of Judges and on average of 60% of the entries are pre-selected to make it onto the stage. All judging is 'blind' with the Judges only being told the garment's name and inspiration, not the designer's name and where they come from.
Among the 20 selected entries to be staged, six are in "Avant Garde" Section; six in "Bizarre Bra"; one in "Children's" Section; two in "Illumination Illusion"; two in "Open" Section; two in "Shades of Grey" Section and one in "South Pacific" Section. Some of these entries have been well accepted in their section for the first time-ever from Thailand, such as Illumination Illusion, Shades of Grey, and South Pacific. Winners of these sections in the part were mainly from New Zealand and Australia.
The judging panel this year includes Ngila Dickson, Oscar winning costume designer for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy; Michel Tuffery, multi media artist from Wellington; Auckland designer Liz Mitchell with her red carpet couture; Sally Burton, resident WOW judge since 1999; and WOW creative director Suzie Moncrieff.
The Montana World of WearableArt Awards Show is an annual spectacular show held New Zealand. Artists and designers from New Zealand and around the world submit their originally created amazing garments that are presented in a unique two hours' show of choreography, music, lighting and special effects.
From humble beginnings in 1987 as a promotion for a rural art gallery in Nelson, the Montana WOW Awards have developed into a real icon of New Zealand's creativity.
From 2005 the Awards Show will take place in Wellington at The Events Centre, a venue seating around 3,000 people. Creator Suzie Moncrieff is the Creative Director of the show, which runs over two weekends in late September each year with thousands of people coming from all over the country and internationally to celebrate the WOW experience. Prizes on offer are over NZ$85,000.
This year together with our partners Air New Zealand and Taxila Fashion School, let us cheer up our young Thai designers to make another history for Thai fashion design industry, and to give Thailand a stronger profile in the international design arena.
