Prof. Rangsan points out that today’s technologically-driven globalization era have tremendously affected society, economy and politics as a whole. Educational institutes, therefore, have to adjust themselves in respond to changing social needs. Nowadays, modern technologies have been applied to enhance opportunities of learning to general public. As a leading educational institute, Ramkhamhaeng University has also made use of modern technologies to enhance educational opportunities for students. Instead of only conventional classroom learning, the university students now have various accesses to education such as distance learning via satellite which is provided to students through the 20 regional branches of its academic service center nationwide. It has also organized global distance learning via the internet. Applying computer and modern technology through the university‘s telecommunications network helps students save cost and time in traveling to the classroom.
Today, Ramkhamhaeng University has advanced another step to ‘m-learning’, providing access of education through mobile phones. The ‘m-learning’ will start operational in the upcoming second semester this year.
“We are pleased that DTAC realizes the importance of education for young people and cooperates with us in developing ‘mobile learning’ through GPRS. We truly believe that with the nationwide network of DTAC plus the educational strength of our university, ‘RU Mobile Learning’ project will become a success. It helps students save time and cost of education as well as be a new learning channel for students. Ramkhamhaeng University currently has more than 600,000 students, so those who can not attend the classroom can easily access mobile learning. We are proud to have applied this new technology to provide borderless access of education to our students and Thai people,” says Prof. Rangsan.
Sunti Medhavikul, DTAC’s Chief Customer Officer, adds : “As the solution provider of wireless education via mobile phones, I would like to thank Ramkhamhaeng University to give us opportunity to take part in widening educational opportunity to the university students. Currently, DTAC has more than eight million subscribers, many of which are students of Ramkhamhaeng University.”
“The cooperation will be a good proof of unlimited benefits or DTAC’s wireless communications. Apart from commercial benefits, it can also serve educational purpose effectively. DTAC’s solutions can, of course, do more than just check the exam’s results or student’s registration. With DTAC’s smart wireless network, students in every level can study any subjects, anytime and throughout the semester easily via their mobile phones. The multimedia functions will make them feel as if sitting in the classroom. Another good point is it helps reduce the trouble of beating the traffic to get to the university,” Mr Sunti says.
He adds that DTAC has competitive advantages over other competitors in term of functional GPRS nationwide network. This is despite not yet including the high-speed EDGE network which works at the speed 4 times faster than GPRS and has service areas covering Bangkok, Chonburi and Rayong. DTAC has also installed EDGE network in various important business areas including in 12 domestic airports and provinces which are in high demand for information.
DTAC has also launched tailor-made ‘Student Program’ wireless package to cater especially to Ramkhamhaeng University students.
Apart from value-for-money package for students, DTAC also provides technical support around the clock and continuously update the subjects of study for mobile learning students.
