NEW DELHI, India (eTurboNews) - In the wake of recent bombings in Bali, Thailand is taking protective actions and spreading word of caution to be on alert for any mishap.
"Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has put the nation's major tourist spots on full alert, hinting of links between Muslim militants in the south of the kingdom and the terrorists who staged the latest Bali bombings," said Reuters.
"By (geography) it seems that they are far apart but actually along sea routes Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia are close. These people (terrorists) are commuting and rotating around in the region. These people have been moving among these countries for generations. They have close connections and links. Their linkages come from relatives, friends and they used to go the same schools," said the PM.
In another development, Phuket has stepped up its security, according to Pol Maj Gen Decha Budnampeth, the new Phuket Provincial Police Commander. According to phuketgazette.net, Budnampeth called for tourists not to be put off by seeing a greater police presence on the street
"I would like to tell tourists who come to Phuket that if seeing police working and checking places disturbs your stay, please understand that we are doing this for your own safety. Please help us by cooperating, and understand that our main concern is security," he said.
Phuket Tourist Association President Pattanapong Aikwanich said he expected Saturday's bombings to have long-term effects on tourism in Asia. "Australians are the main tourists for Bali. In the short-term, following the bombings in Bali, they will turn to other destinations, such as Phuket. However, this will have a negative long-term affect on tourism throughout the region. Nowadays, when tourists want to visit a country, they look at the image of the entire region, such as Asia. If they think it is not safe, they will not come," he reportedly said.
