Bangkok--Oct 18--Shin Satellite
This is to inform you that this morning, Shin Broadband Internet (Thailand) Co. Ltd. (SBI), signed a contract with Thailand Cable Network (TLC) to provide Satellite News Gathering equipment using IPSTAR technology. Normally, outside broadcast equipment vans used today cost several million baht and are unable to reach areas with poor road conditions. This has often meant that television reporters miss opportunities for live broadcasts direct from the news source. SBI’s Two Way SNG is fully portable and can be loaded onto the back of a pickup truck or four-wheel drive vehicle and can be set up in 15 minutes on any sort of terrain. The set consists of a dish, notebook computer and an IPSTAR satellite modem similar in size to the notebook computer.
TLC will use the system to broadcast live events from provincial areas that are normally not covered by the major free-to-air channels. The system uses Internet Protocol to send pictures and can be used for two-way interviews for breaking stories. TLC’s Bamrung Wasantakon explained it would allow the news channel to provide equal access to local news for all consumers and he wanted to make TLC their “local cable news channel.”
One of TLC’s partners, Nation Broadcasting Corporation Co. Ltd., which owns Thailand’s first 24-hr news channel, Nation Channel, saw this as an extension into the provinces of its quality news content using TLC. Mr. Adisak Limprungphatanakit, saw the channel as about to garner much interest from people who would be able to follow the news as it happens in their areas.
This is just a brief summary of what should be an expanding business for SBI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shin Satellite Plc.
