The 10th AWID International Forum on Women’s Rights and Development, which is being organized by the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) in Bangkok from October 27 - 30, 2005 with some 2,000 delegates from 120 countries, will be appropriately kick-started with the highly-acclaimed HBO Original Movie “Iron Jawed Angels” on the evening of October 26th.
The movie screening, which is organized in conjunction with HBO Asia and the
Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok, will also help raise funds for AWID’s ‘Innovation Seed Grants Project’ specifically for women’s development projects in Thailand, through audiences’ donation on a voluntary basis. However, entrance to watch the movie is free.
‘Iron Jawed Angels’ recounts for a contemporary audience a key chapter in U.S. history: in this case, the struggle of suffragettes who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Focusing on two defiant women, Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor), the film shows how these activists broke from the mainstream women’s rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women’s voting rights in 1920. Breathing life into the relationships between Paul, Burns and others, the movie makes the women feel like complete characters instead of one-dimensional figures from a distant past. Directed by Kajya Von Granier, the film won a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Angelica Huston).
Ms. Joanna Kerr, Executive Director of AWID, said, “We are pleased to hold the special charity screening of ‘Iron Jawed Angels’, for both our delegates and interested members of the public on October 26th. The HBO Original film, which depicts a passage from history about how women struggled for change, truly reflects the theme of this year’s Forum of ‘How does change happen?’ and, therefore, is a suitable curtain raiser to the forum, which aims to stimulate, challenge and enlighten our participants who are dynamic and innovative leaders of the global women’s movement today. We are most grateful to HBO and the Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok for their gesture of solidarity with the women of Thailand. ”
Ms. Caroline Wong, Director of Marketing Communications of HBO Asia, said, “HBO is proud and delighted to bring our cutting-edge original movie, ‘Iron Jawed Angels,’ to the 10th AWID International Forum on Women’s Rights and Development, and create an opportunity to raise funds for women’s development projects in Thailand. I am confident that the audience will appreciate the inspiring tale about the hardships and motivations which our gender had to bear on the path to emancipation — something which many women today take for granted.”
The charity film screening, which will take place on October 26, 2005 in Ballroom 1 of the Shangri-la Hotel, Bangkok at 7:30 p.m., is also open to the general public free of charge.
