Bangkok--Oct 26--SET
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and Mahidol University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding providing funding for badminton court construction.
Prof. Emeritus Pornchai Matangkasombut, President of Mahidol University, has expressed his gratitude to the SET for its recognition of sports as a youth-building tool and its support for the university’s new badminton courts, which will be used for the university’s hosting of the 33rd National University Games — “Salaya Games” on December 23-30, 2005 at Mahidol’s Salaya Campus. The university has already invited Her Royal Highness Princess Siriwanwaree Mahidol to chair a workshop aimed at promoting sports science on December 19, 2005 at 9.00 a.m.
SET President Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong stated that SET has provided THB11 mln. from its “SET’s 30th Anniversary Charity Fund” to build 9 additional standard badminton courts with complete facilities, including a gym room, infirmary and shower rooms.
“After the end of Salaya Games, these courts will become the prototype for other sports stadiums with a planned self-operation and long operating hours for the benefit of area youth and the general public. The courts will be open to 11.00 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays and until 10.00 pm on Sundays through Thursdays. This financial support for Mahidol’s badminton courts is in accordance with the SET’s 30th Anniversary Charity Fund’s objective to contribute more to the society. Our aim is to develop more sports facilities where Thailand’s youth can make better use of their free time building their bodies and minds rather than at entertainment venues,” said Mr. Kittiratt.
After the MOU signing, Prof. Emeritus Pornchai Matangkasombut announced that there will be 45 Rajabhat Universities as well as campuses from around Thailand of the Rajamangala Institutes of Technology participating in the Salaya Games. This will make the Salaya Games the biggest-ever National University Games, in which athletes from as many as 110 private and state universities will take part. In order to help assure a more positive impression on the more than 8,000 sportsmen expected to be participating in the event, Mahidol University is now speeding up its renovation and construction works to help make Salaya an exceptional sports venue in time for the games.
