Bangkok--Nov 8--UNISBKK
Gender equality is the focus of an international United Nations Expert Group Meeting at the UN Conference Centre Bangkok, 8-11 November 2005. The meeting aims to lay a global roadmap for gender equality and women's empowerment.
The meeting, "Enhancing Participation of Women in Development through an
Enabling Environment for Achieving Gender Equality and the Advancement of Women" is organized by the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women and hosted by UNESCAP.
Experts will input policy recommendations for a report to the Secretary-General for use by the UN's Commission on the Status of Women. The report's policy recommendations will also benefit governments, international and regional organizations and civil society.
The Expert Group Meeting is in preparation for the UN's Commission on the
Status of Women fiftieth session, which begins on 27 February 2006 and interrogates the theme "Enhanced participation of women in development: An enabling environment for achieving gender equality and the advancement of women, taking into account in the fields of education, health and work."
A report of the Secretary-General submitted to the 49th session of the
Commission in 2005 found that a large gap remains between gender policy and
practice. Discriminatory practices and public attitudes towards the advancement of women and gender equality have not changed at the same pace as policy, legal and institutional frameworks, it said.
