An MOU signing ceremony held today marks a new alliance for the development of electricity distribution compliance within the Lower Mekong River Basin.
Pornthep Thanyapongchai, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) governor, and Josephine Leo, CEO of CDC SEA (Copper Development Center South East Asia), together with representatives from Electricit Du Laos, Electricit Du Cambodge, Hanoi Power Company and Ho Chi Minh City Power Company, attended the ceremony and signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
The initiatives of the alliance include education and training programmes focusing on reducing loss in electricity distribution, the exploitation of GIS in electricity distribution planning, the construction of underground transmission systems, and special training for electrical engineers and technical staffs.
“The launch of this strategic cooperation between MEA, CDC SEA, and other electricity distributors within the Lower Mekong River Basin has created a reliable electricity distribution compliance up to the global standard. It signifies the emergence of a higher energy stability to address the increasing electricity demand within the region as investments and economic expansions in each country rely mainly on power management efficiency.” said the MEA governor.
He also said, “The driving force behind this successful cooperation is CDC SEA, which has worked closely with MEA to get funding and conduct electricity distribution surveys in each country in order to draft the development plan. Brainstorming sessions between representatives from MEA and its neighboring electricity distributors has been organised in Vientiane and Hanoi to ensure all project objectives and important issues have been addressed, with essential administrative and technical skills extensively developed.”
MEA will further take a leading role in giving assistance and consultancy services related to effective power distribution to neighboring countries. The services cover electrical equipment maintenance, servicing and energy-saving planning.
Ms. Leo, CEO of CDC SEA said “ The Copper Development Centre — South East Asia is proud to be an integral part of this multi-lateral, regional partnership which promises to raise the standards of power distribution and thereby the standards of living of the people in the region. Our commitment is possible because of copper’s role in energy efficiency due to its superior conductivity — whether in cables or electrical component in the power distribution systems. The centre is also in a unique position to fully utilise this platform to expand this effort geographically, and to do our part in contributing to the realisation of the ASEAN Power Grid under the ASEAN Interconnection Master Plan.”
