With the first anniversary of the South-East Asian Tsunami approaching, SPARK travels to the city of Banda Aceh, Indonesia for a special edition to examine how technology might be used to protect people from impending natural disasters.
In this edition, SPARK first visits the region of Aceh, which was close to the epicenter of last year’s devastating Indian Ocean earthquake which spawned the Tsunami. Host Kristie Lu Stout reports on the various low-tech and high-tech tsunami early warning systems that have developed over the last year. Kristie also visits a German research ship that senses seismic activities at sea.
From there, SPARK travels to Italy where in Sicily, where we accompany scientists to Mount Etna, where scientists study how technology can prevent volcanoes and earthquakes from causing havoc in the future. The focus then shifts to Venice and a report on the Italian government’s new controversial flood barrier known as the Moses Project.
Finally, Jenny Harrison from CNN’s International Weather Center reports on how technology is used to track extreme weather conditions, and how information gleaned from this is presented to the public.
