::-Course Outline-::
Module 1: Getting Started
Introduces Visual Basic .NET and explains how it fits into the Microsoft .NET platform. It explains how to use the programming tools in Microsoft Visual Studio(R) .NET and provides enough practice so that students can create their first application in Visual Basic .NET.
Module 2: Working with Forms and Controls
Explains fundamental programming concepts, including event-driven programming, classes, objects, properties, methods, and events. This module also explains how to use forms and controls to create a user interface, which includes the following: how to create a form, set properties, call methods, and write code for events; how to add controls to a form; how to manage multiple forms, how to use message boxes; how to use naming conventions, and how to format and document code.
Module 3: Using Variables and Arrays
Explains how to name, declare, assign values to, and use variables and constants. It explains how to declare variables with different levels of scope, how to create your own data structures, and how to convert variable values from one data type to another. It also describes how to store data in an array.
Module 4: Working with Procedures
Describes how to create and use Sub and Function procedures, including predefined functions, and how to structure code for increased reusability.
Module 5: Decision Structures and Loops
Explains how to implement decision structures and loop structures to control program output and execution.
Module 6: Validating User Input
Explains how to validate user input at both the field level and the form level in applications. It describes how to handle invalid input by providing error messages and guiding users through the process of finding and fixing errors. It describes how to use control properties and methods to restrict and validate data entry.
Module 7: Handling Errors and Exceptions
Explains types of errors that can occur in a program, and explains how to use the debugging tools provided with Visual Basic .NET to help diagnose and correct the errors. These tools include the Visual Studio .NET debugger, debugging windows, and structured exception handling.
Module 8: Object-Oriented Programming in Visual Basic .NET
Explains how to create and use classes. The module explains the concepts of abstraction, encapsulation, instantiation, initialization, constructors, and destructors. This module also describes inheritance, polymorphism, and namespaces.
Module 9: Building Controls
Describes the options for building your own controls. It explains how to extend the functionality of an existing Windows Forms control, combine multiple existing controls into a composite control, and build a new custom control. It also covers how to add design-time attributes and licensing support to a control.
Module 10: Enhancing the Usability of Applications
Explains how to use the accessibility, Help, and localization features available in the .NET Framework.
Module 11: Data-Centric Applications and ADO.NET
You will be able to diagram the architecture of data-centric applications, give examples of storage options, choose a connected or disconnected environment based on application requirements, diagram the ADO.NET object model, use the System.Data namespaces in applications, analyze typical business scenarios, and describe the use of XML in ADO.NET.
Module 12: Connecting to Data Sources
You will be able to choose a .NET data provider, connect to SQL Server, connect to OLE DB data sources, manage a connection, handle common connection exceptions, and implement and control connection pooling.
Module 13: Performing Connected Database Operations
You will be able to build command objects, execute commands that return a single value, execute commands that return rows, execute commands that do not return rows, and use transactions.
Module 14: Building DataSets
You will be able to build a DataSet and a DataTable, bind a DataSet to a DataGrid, create a custom DataSet by using inheritance, define a data relationship, modify data in a DataTable, find and select rows in a DataTable, and sort and filter a DataTable by using a DataView.
Module 15: Reading and Writing XML with ADO.NET
You will be able to generate an XML Schema Definition Language (XSD) schema from a DataSet by using graphical tools, identify the purpose and uses of the XmlDataDocument object, save a DataSet structure to an XSD schema file, create and populate a DataSet from an XSD schema and XML data, load data and schemas simultaneously into a DataSet, save DataSet data as XML, and write and load changes by using a DiffGram.
Module 16: Building DataSets from Existing Data Sources
You will be able to configure a DataAdapter to retrieve information, populate a DataSet by using a DataAdapter, configure a DataAdapter to modify information, persist data changes to a server, and manage data conflicts.
Module 17: Deploying Windows Forms Applications
Explains assemblies and the use of strong-named assemblies and the global assembly cache in the .NET Framework. It also covers how to configure and deploy your Windows Forms applications.
