SITA is working with a consortium to deliver one of the largest ever common-use airport projects for the 50-million passenger capacity New Bangkok International Airport (NBIA) now named as “Suvarnabhumi”. The consortium involved is Airports Systems Integration Specialists (ASIS) comprising SIEMENS, ABB, SAMART and SATYUM.
The $20 million contract covers a five-year period and includes an initial order for over 600 CUTE (Common-Use Terminal Equipment) check-in workstations as well as the Common Language Facility product, Passenger Handler. There is also provision for the inclusion of an initial pilot of 50 Common Use Self Service kiosks when required as NBIA gears up for a doubling of passenger traffic and the arrival of the Airbus A380.
The Suvarnabhumi Airport is located 30 kms to the east of Bangkok. It is now under construction and will become operational in the middle of 2006. The new airport, commissioned by the Thai government to boost tourism, is expected to reach annual traffic of 50 million passengers — making it one of the biggest international airports in the region.
The concourse building at NBIA will be equipped with 51 aircraft stands. There will be four aerobridge gates designed to accommodate the Airbus A380. The existing Bangkok International Airport is used by over 80 airlines and caters to 25 million passengers and 700,000 tons of cargo annually.
SITA INC’s sub-contract is with SAMART Comtech Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of the SAMART Group specialising in Information Computers Technology System Integration. SAMART will be the first level service provider and responsible for maintenance of the equipment to ensure that international standards are met.
In order to provide a state-of-the-art Airport Information Management System at NBIA, SITA INC will install its AirportConnect IP-centric operating platform and PassengerHandler, a common language check-in and boarding application, at the airport.
“SITA has been chosen by NBIA because of their strong commitment and ability to deliver the latest technology to this world-class airport,” said Charoenrath Vilailuck, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Samart Corporation.
Russ Lewis, SITA INC Airport & Desktop Regional Vice President in Asia Pacific, said, “The New Bangkok International Airport will be a state-of-the art facility and its commitment to self-service and common-use will make it a big favourite with airlines and passengers.
“Thailand is one of Asia’s most important aviation hubs. It is critical to maintain high standards of passenger handling and customer service. The SITA CUTE system can help the new airport to simplify travel and transportation by speeding up passenger check-in, maximizing limited resources and generating more revenue.”
SITA’s CUTE system offers end-to-end connectivity from host to the airport desktop, providing airlines with access to their own systems on an industry open platform. Each CUTE workstation uses a pre-integrated browser and is connected over IP to support the individual airline needs. SITA developed the first shared-use workstations, and its terminals are now used by some 285 customers at over 200 airport locations worldwide, processing over 580 million passengers annually.
