The value of the goods seized is more than 1 million Baht.
Following the past two years’ of campaign against an epidemic of counterfeit toner/ink cartridges throughout Bangkok and surrounding provinces, Canon Kabushiki Kaisha (CANON) and Seiko Epson Corporation (EPSON), Tilleke & Gibbins and members of the Police raid team of the Metropolitan Police of the Royal Thai Police jointly executed a series raids on February 8, 2006, in the On-Nut area of Bangkok, targeting sellers of fake Canon and Epson branded toner cartridge and inkjets. The sellers were charged with trademark infringement offenses, which carry a maximum penalty of four years of imprisonment and/or a fine of Baht 400,000, or both.
The police conducted searches of three targets and found that the counterfeit goods were being stored in a locked warehouse near the targets’ main office. The representatives from CANON and EPSON expressed that they will coordinate efforts with the Suppression of IPRs Infringement Division of the Metropolitan Police to rid the market of fakes. Tilleke & Gibbins International Ltd., the legal representatives for CANON and EPSON, were pleased that the police’s organized and coordinated actions unveiled the targets’ hidden stock and that the raid team acted out of concern to protect consumers from being deceived about the origin and quality of the sub-standard fakes.
