Bangkok--Feb 14--Webster University Thailand
Webster University Thailand (WUT), the only residential American University in the country, today announced that 22 school counselors representing international schools and colleges from 8 countries participated in WUT’s annual Counselors’ Day held 12 — 14 February 2006 at WUT’s Cha-Am campus.
The countries that were represented by counselors were Thailand with 11, Nepal with four, China with two, and Cambodia, India, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Singapore with one each.
Schools in Thailand that were represented by counselors included the International Community School (ICS); American School of Bangkok (ASB); Ekamai International School; International School of Bangkok (ISB); American Pacific International School, Chiang Mai; Prem Tinsulanonda International School, Chiang Mai; Chiang Mai International School; British Curriculum International School, Phuket; St. Stephen’s International School, Khao Yai; and Garden International School, Rayong.
The purpose of the annual Counselors’s Day event is to provide a full and comprehensive introduction and orientation for counselors from Thailand and various countries in the region so they can provide insight, information and encouragement to students in their respective schools to study in Thailand at Webster University’s Cha-am campus.
The three-day event combines professional and social functions providing the visiting counselors with the unique opportunity to meet and develop relations with WUT’s administration, faculty and students; to learn more about the university’s academic programs, which offer degrees in Business, Media Communications, International Relations, Psychology, Buddhist Studies, Thai Studies/Language and Computer Science; and be introduced to WUT’s unique Site Transfer program which allows students the opportunity to transfer to other campuses around the world in the Webster University system.
Complementing presentations made by members of the administration and faculty, were visitations to various classes that were in session during the visit including Public Communications/Public Relations; Introduction to Media Research, which took place in the university’s state of the art media lab; World Religions; and Financial Accounting.
Associate Professor Kit Jenkins, Rector, Webster University Thailand, believes that students who seek an American or international degree, can study at WUT without having to leave either Thailand or the region.
“WUT offers a unique set of advantages for students who want to study for an American degree without having to leave home or travel thousands of miles away to earn degrees in Australia, the U.S. and Canada or Europe.”
“At Webster, students can be close to home and their parents, earn an American degree which is recognized by the North Central Accrediting Association in the USA and the Thai Ministry of Education, and save money in the process,” stated Prof. Jenkins.
According to Prof. Jenkins, a degree earned at Webster is very good value for money; the university provides an environment that features small classes, individual attention and an international student body and faculty. And, at the same time, students can tailor-make flexible programs which suit their individual objectives — where they can easily step-in or step-out of the university, study online or pursue various classroom options.
Prof. Jenkins stated that “Counselors’ Day provides counselors from schools in Thailand and the region with a thorough introduction to the university’s unique academic environment in which all courses are taught in English; and where students from over 30 countries are enrolled, making WUT possibly the most multicultural campus per capita in country.”
She went on to say that “The multinational make-up of the student body provides students from all nations the unique opportunity to meet other students from around the world, to learn about their history, culture and customs, while developing long lasting relationships and a network of contacts that may prove valuable in the future.”
Visiting counselors also found the experience at Webster University Thailand to be a positive one and will recommend to students they counsel to enroll at WUT.
Ms. Alice Cove, Campus Counselor at the American School of Bangkok (ASB) says “WUT is totally unique, perfect for ASB students in terms of both academics and social environment. WUT is a true American university.”
As Campus Counselor at Chiang Mai International School, Jon Hartmann maintains similar thoughts regarding the WUT experience. “WUT offers the full package for students who seek an American education who do not want to leave Thailand, their parents and friends. It’s the best deal around regarding value for money in a university education and the campus is so safe, that Thai parents can even send their daughters worry-free. I therefore recommend a WUT education to both Americans and Thai students wholeheartedly.”
Ms. Neena Virmani, Campus Counselor and Dean of Students at Pathways World School, Gurgaon, NCR, Delhi , India, believes Indian students, particularly those from towns outside the major cities, can make an easier transition between India and western countries like America, Canada, Australia and Europe, by first studying at WUT.
“I view enrolment at WUT as a very good stepping stone for students from India and other Asian countries to eventually transfer to Western universities without having to be too far away from home. For this reason, our school’s outreach program to rural parents of university-bound students has been very positive.”
