European Commission officials paid several European Union airlines a surprise inspection on Tuesday over alleged price fixing.
Among those raided were British Airways, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa and Luxembourg's Cargolux.
BA, in an RTE News report, confirmed that it had received a request for information from both the EC and the US Department of Justice relating to alleged cartel activity involving BA and a number of other airlines and cargo operators.
The report added that the European Commission said it had carried out unannounced inspections at the various premises as it had reason to believe the companies concerned may have violated Article 81 of the EC-Treaty, which prohibits practices such as price fixing.
BA, Air France, KLM and Luftansa have issued statements saying they intend to cooperate in the investigation.
According to another published report, a source close to the investigation said the probe was restricted to alleged price-fixing for cargo services and involved several other airlines including Lan Chile, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Polar Air.
