Bangkok--Feb 17--SET
The Office of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federation of Capital Market Organizations (FeTCO) are two key bodies hosting the Capital Market for Students 2006 Program. This is the 3rd consecutive year the capital market organizations will provide opportunities for students, especially those from outside Bangkok, to gain hands-on experience and income during their school break. Students are invited to apply now until Mar. 15 at the SET.
The Chairman of “Capital Market for Students” Program and SEC Secretary-General, Mr. Thirachai Phuvanat Naranubala, announced that this program is but one of the activities that the various organizations in the Thai capital markets jointly hold to contribute to Thai society. The program allows students to gain experience in the capital market industry or various social foundations during their summer vacation during March — May 2006, and enables them to earn some money. Thus, the program will benefit the students themselves, their workplaces, and society at large.
“The program shows the unity of the organizations in the Thai capital market in making important social contributions. It is a great opportunity for listed, securities, and investment management companies, as well as related organizations in the capital market, to demonstrate their commitment to society by accepting the students as interns or participants in their activities. This will be a valuable learning experience for the students to help them further develop,” Mr. Thirachai said.
Chairman of FeTCO, Dr. Kongkiat Opaswongkarn, said: “The program has asked for cooperation from all related bodies to accept students as interns during this school break. Emphasis is on providing students, especially those out of the Bangkok metropolitan area, with valuable opportunities to gain experience at the branch offices of participating organizations or academic institutions located near the students’ residences. Furthermore the students will also have an opportunity to take part in society-oriented projects whilst earning some money for themselves and their families.”
Any corporation or organization interested in taking part in the program can do so in 3 different ways: 1) Accept interns directly into their organizations by themselves, then notify the Program’s center to get a range of public relations tie-ins, 2) Notify the SET to find the student interns for them, or 3) donate to the Program so that the students can have a chance to gain experience working in social foundations such as the Duang Prateep Foundation, Slum Infants Center Foundation, Children Development Foundation, Rak Thai Foundation, Sikkha Asia Foundation, Thai-Arthorn Foundation, Klongtoey community, the Red Cross Society, Tai Wisdom Association, and Population and Community Development Association. Participating corporations or organizations will be entitled to deduct 1.5 times their expenses (no less than 50% of minimum wages) for the program when calculating their corporate income taxes.
The SET President and secretary of FeTCO, Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong, said that the SET is acting as an application center for participating organizations.
“The highlight of the SET activities will be the Library Development Project. These libraries have the SET Corners established in them. Currently there are 45 SET corners nationwide in 27 universities, including in the 3 southernmost provinces. The project is aimed at allowing Thai youth to demonstrate their creativity and also encourage better reading habits amongst Thai youths. Participating students will get an allowance, prizes, and also the opportunity to join a study tour to visit Singapore’s library,” Mr. Kittiratt said.
In addition, chess and GO training and competitions will be offered, as in previous years. The students will also have an opportunity to serve as interns in one of the SET group, e.g., the mai, Bond Electronic Exchange, Thailand Securities Institute, Thailand Securities Depositories Co., Ltd., SETTRADE.Com Co., Ltd., Family Know-How Co., Ltd., Thailand Futures Exchange Pcl., and Maruey Knowledge and Resource Center.
