Momentum continues to build in the run-up to the Middle East Travel and Tourism Summit (METTS), to be held February 26th -27th at Jordan’s Dead Sea. BBC World correspondent Lyse Doucet has signed on to moderate the conference. Three companies have added their names to the list of official sponsors, and several countries have announced plans to send ministerial delegations.
Ms. Doucet, a news correspondent and presenter for the BBC World service, has a strong background in the Middle East and has reported on events throughout the region. Before joining BBC World, she worked for 15 years as a BBC foreign correspondent and, in 2003, was awarded a Silver Sony Award for News Broadcaster of the Year.
Three companies have recently announced their sponsorship of METTS—the Bahrain International Circuit, the MA Kharafi Group, and WS Atkins. In doing so, they join a distinguished group of organisations already supporting the event, including the Saraya Jordan investment company, UK Trade and Investment, and the Jordan Tourism Board.
The Bahrain International Circuit, the “Home of Motor Sport in the Middle East,” draws international attention to the kingdom each year with the Bahrain Grand Prix. This year, the race will be the opening round of the Formula One World Championship, reaching an estimated 400 million viewers worldwide and serving as a platform to promote tourism to Bahrain.
The MA Kharafi Group of Kuwait invests in major travel and tourism development projects in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. The Port Ghaleb resort community on Egypt’s Red Sea is its largest development project, a $1.2 billion investment that will include a yacht marina, an international airport, a conference center, a shopping center, and luxury resort hotels.
Atkins join METTS as key sponsors and partners. Adrian Perera, Director said “We are delighted to be supporting a forum that endeavours to create an important momentum for sustainable development through tourism. We are proud of our engineering expertise and architectural design capabilities and look forward to cementing further relationships in the region through this Summit”.
The growing number of registered participants from across the globe reflects the strong international interest in METTS. Delegates are expected from the US, the UK, South America, Australia, South Africa, North Africa, the Gulf and the Levant. Iran, Libya, Algeria, Sudan, and Syria will send official ministerial delegations, and several bilateral tourism protocol agreements are expected to be signed in the margins of the summit.
METTS will bring together investors, government representatives, and professionals from all sectors of the travel and tourism industry to explore topics relevant to enhancing regional tourism. Twelve information panels will provide a forum for exploring the region’s potential in a number of key areas in travel and tourism, including infrastructure development, public/private partnership, security, foreign direct investment, and preservation of cultural heritage.
