AXN (Ch.19, UBC), the heart of action and adventure television, is introducing yet another new series, adding to a long list of must-watch programming for Asian viewers. Rescue Me, a critically acclaimed series, is available to AXN viewers first and exclusively on AXN feed this March. Rescue Me premieres on 7 March 2006 at 11pm.
Rescue Me is about the lives and hopes of the firefighters in New York City, post 9/11. These unsung heroes return to their lives, continue to face life-threatening situations but find that life is never really going to be the same. Secretly, many of these exceptional people are battling to come to terms with their own personal traumas. They each have to fight their own internal demons and idiosyncrasies - one has conversation with a tragic victim from the past and another has a compulsive gambling problem. The show offers the fast action of fire fighting but gives a very refreshing perspective on the internal struggles of these unsung heroes.
“Viewers can expect a thrilling and emotional ride. Though the show deals with very serious life issues, its script is very well written and funny. Rescue Me is an intelligent and compelling show that will keep viewers glued to the screens with its electrifying mix of poignancy and action. This is a show that you do not want to miss,” says Ricky Ow, General Manager of SPE Networks — Asia.
RESCUE ME — Heroes Are Human Too
In a post-9/11 world left scarred and fearful, the critically-acclaimed series Rescue Me takes viewers into the world and minds of our protectors who grapple with their memories and their own lives even as they save others. The much-lauded series centres on Tommy Gavin and the firefighting team of Ladder 62 in New York City, including “Good” Chief Jerry Reilly who wrestles with his own vices; Franco Rivera, a smug, fast-living Casanova and Tommy’s confidant; Lt Kenny Shea, a “man’s man” given to poetry-writing for therapy; and Mike Silletti, the newcomer who is just embarking on his career.
The multi-talented Denis Leary won a Golden Globe nomination for his lead role as Gavin, a toughened firefighter who nonetheless struggles with the pressure of his work, flashbacks of death and disaster, and a failed marriage with three children. With an extensive background in screenwriting, producing and directing, and an impressive resume since his start in 1987, Leary puts his comedy roots to good use, combining his genuine compassion for the lives of rescuers, with delightfully black humour, in a breakthrough performance that has made even the most severe critics regard him as a serious actor. What results is a brilliantly surprising series that succeeds in balancing perfect wit with the depth of its subject matter — the private fears and battles of the defenders of today’s world and how they remain extraordinary in spite of it all.
Created and written by Leary and Emmy award winner Peter Tolan (The Larry Sanders Show, Murphy Brown), Rescue Me received the 2005 Visionary Award by the Producer’s Guild of America, and was the American Film Institute’s Official Programme of the Year, among other accolades. Billed by Time magazine as “most moving” and “one of the funniest shows you will see this year”, Rescue Me finally celebrates the firefighters and their spirit of solidarity in the face of tragedy, promising to move viewers to tears and laughter, and redefining heroes as it looks at the heart of their inner struggles to conquer fears with true courage and a touch of wit.
Rescue Me premieres on 7 March 2006 at 11pm only at AXN (UBC Ch.19).
