Bangkok--14 Mar--SET
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and experts in developing educational games have organized the “Financial IQ 2006” contest. This event is to find high school students with bright ideas for developing content for teachers to use in their “Money, A Valuable Item” classes, while attracting more attention from students.
SET EVP, Mr. Punsak Vejanurug, who also heads the Capital Market Education Division, revealed that the Financial IQ 2006 competition is a joint collaboration between the SET’s Thailand Securities Institute (TSI), TUPPY Library and Noble Education.com, which specializes in educational game development.
Mr. Punsak noted, “This competition is to develop educational content for the ‘Personal Finance for Youth’ course under the “Money, A Valuable Item” project, which was jointly organized by the SET and the Office of Basic Education Commission, the Ministry of Education. Over 10,000 teachers nationwide have been trained under this project, enabling their students, ranging from Grades 1 -12, to learn more effectively.
The Financial IQ 2006 competition will take place from March 10-18, 2006 at Burapha University, Chonburi. Contest participants will be 60 winning students from all over the country who took part in the 2005 “Money, A Valuable Item” quiz game and youth camp by the same name.
“The contest includes training in basic finance theories, financial planning and investment options, and game design. Students will develop and design games based on the information they have learned, under the guidance of guest experts. At the end of the competition, participants will present their creations before a panel of judges.
The winners’ work will be polished and used as educational materials for schools under the “Money, A Valuable Item” project. If their work is commercially viable, the designers will receive copyright fees,” Mr. Punsak concluded.
Mr. Kuna Krongboonying, Managing Director of Ingenious Biz Co., Ltd., revealed that promoting educational game design was a new idea in Thai society. He said, “Having students join in the contest will help them understand personal financial management better, learn how to adapt that understanding to educational game design, and also teach them to how to use their free time during the school break in a more meaningful and productive way. Participants will learn valuable lessons and further develop their analytical skills and imagination through designing a game protocol and by working as part of a team. They will create new games that may later be further developed and distributed.”
The competition winner will receive a scholarship worth THB20,000, while 2 first runners-up will each receive a scholarship worth THB12,000. Two second runners-up will each receive a scholarship worth THB8,000. The winner and runners-up will also receive a plaque.
On March 17, 2006, the winners of the Financial IQ 2006 competition will be decided and announced by a panel of highly-respected individuals from various institutions, e.g., Acclaim Consultant International Co. Ltd.; the Office of Basic Education Commission; Bangkok, Chulalongkorn, Srinakarinwirote, and Thammasat Universities; and the SET.
