From the farmlands of England to the poultry markets of Thailand and Hong Kong, bird flu continues to impact people’s livelihood and lives as fears of a pandemic grow. CNN’s half hour special ‘THE MIGRATION OF BIRD FLU’ reports on those affected around the world as international tension increases with each H5N1 related death and the disease risks becoming both an economic and health disaster.
The program starts at the home of CNN’s Charles Hodson in rural Somerset as he discusses the threat to the global poultry industry while bringing his personal experiences of raising chickens. Senior Asia Correspondent Mike Chinoy then reports from Thailand as he hears from the WHO, health officials and volunteer bird flu monitors on their combined efforts to eradicate the disease in a country where raising chickens is common practice.
Poultry dominates both in the headlines and markets in Hong Kong and CNN’s Andrew Stevens talks with poultry workers and medical professionals there on the frontline of the disease. ‘THE MIGRATION OF BIRD FLU’ also looks at the status of research, the clinical understanding of the disease and its effect on both humans and birds.
From Asia the program moves to Africa as correspondent Jeff Koinange tracks the frustration of local poultry farmers and their attempts to sustain their livelihood in rural Nigeria. As the virus continues to spread at an alarming rate throughout the country’s birds, citizens wonder if their government can cope with a threat of this size.
