Great cataclysms that shook the world during the past 100,000 years left signs that are recorded in the earth. These events — floods, mega-tsunamis, and meteorite-crashes — are on a scale far beyond the experiences of humanity in modern history. These are natural disasters of unimaginable magnitude.
“Earth Shocks” is a new series, premiering on the National Geographic Channel (UBC 24) on Saturday, April 8 with two one-hour episodes — Mega Volcano at 8pm and Mega Flood at 9pm.
This new series combines computer generated imagery (CGI), dramatic reconstruction and compelling storytelling to recreate the distant past and tell the tale of the greatest natural disasters in human history. Each episode presents a detailed and dramatic portrait of the prehistoric world, with expert archaeologists, geologists and other scientists who explain ‘how’ and ‘why ‘these disasters occurred.
Earth Shocks: MEGA VOLCANO
Beneath Lake Toba on the tropical island of Sumartra lies a dormant super volcano, which was responsible for the biggest eruption known to man. Mega Volcano tells the story of the volcano that may have caused an Ice Age, wiping out more than 60 percent of the human population…and has the potential to erupt again.
Earth Shocks: MEGA FLOOD
It just doesn’t fit with conventional wisdom of how the world's landscapes were formed. This strange place is so barren and scarred that the earliest settlers to see it called it "the Scablands." It’s a landscape that has refused to reveal its secrets. Action packed science, cutting edge computer graphics, and story-driven drama weave together to explore this mystery, which has obsessed scientists for over a century.
The Scablands: a strange, alien landscape stretching over two thousands square kilometres, due east of Seattle. This is the most curious of places. Massive gorges suddenly appear inches from the edge of the gently rolling farmland. A waterfall that dwarfs Niagara Falls - but has no water. Giant chasms thousands of feet deep. Massive boulders the size of houses, sitting in the middle of scrubland as if a giant had dropped them there. What formed all these features?
Mega Flood is a compelling documentary of a journey with scientists to piece together a puzzle and try to uncover the origins of the Scablands. What is discovered that formed this landscape proves to be stranger than fiction.
